Deleted files - any way back?

    Hi

I have been using Canon DPP software as a RAW converter direct from a 4GB Sandisk CF card and was looking at a series of shots deleting those that were unsharp or unsatisfactory. Stupidly enough I deleted a shot that I wanted to keep . Actually I have noticed that DPP sometimes selects more than the file that you want, but I'll stay with the stupid theory at the moment.

I then downloaded a freeware program called freeundelete and used it to recover the files. It appeared to successfully recover the files, they are the right size and filename, but DPP will not read them. Any ideas?

No idea about that software, never heard of it.

But, a valuable lesson learnt - Never work straight from your card!

ID the filetype still correct? ie do they still appear as raw files? (if that's what they were in the first place)

Check that the file still ends in .cr2 (you'll have to tell you comp to display file extensions to edit this if it's wrong).

If it's not that I can't think what it is unless the file has been corrupted in some way........

I'd agree not to work direct from the card in future though - copy it all to the machine and delete from there. At least it should be in the recycle bin if you make a mistake...

Yes thanks, the filename extension is CR2, no problems with that.

As I was writing the question I was thinking that I should not have been editing straight from the card, and you have confirmed this. Copy to hard drive first in future.

Copy to hard drive then back up to CD/DVD. Possibly (depending on paranoia!) back up to another external HDD as well.

Hmmm don't bother with the CD/DVD just mutliple hard drives, they are so cheap now, 500 gb for £50, seems silly not to have a load of them.

.... And don't delete the files on your card until you have processed or sorted the images on your PC.

(Alternatively, make a backup of the complete folder before deleting anything).

Sandisk do a recovery disk with a lot of their cards - I've got quite a few of them hanging around - check to see if you have one about anywhere (they're small cds, not full size) and it may be better at recovering.
Sometimes the files get recovered but not all the info is there, but I assume that sandisk know their own materials, so their software should be ok.

You sometimes get free software with your Camera. Not too sure about Canon, but i know Sony provide it.
