    GIMP users help!

    Hi. I was wondering: i have a rectangle panaramic picture, and i need to get it into a square shape, how?

    Either add white/black/etc., space above and/or below the image, or crop into a section of the panorama at a 1:1 ratio.

    You can also use the scale tool if the keep aspect ratio box isn't ticked, although it will compress/stretch the image for some interesting effects.

    That sort of depends on what you want to acheieve.

    Do you want to have a square image, say mainly black (or other colour) that has a strip through the middle where the panoramic image is shown. If so I'd create a new picture of the same width and height and make this equal to the width of the original image (or a bit more if you want a border). Then colour it as appropriate. Copy the other image, paste as a layer and position accordingly.

    Do you want to create a square section out of the original image. If so, use the crop tool and set the ratio to 1:1 and tick the box that forces the ratio. Select the area you want and once happy press enter.

    If you want to extend the image vertically, and loose the aspect ration (it will look quite weird) check out the post above.
