    Christmas DIY Projects

    Hello Everyone,

Just wondered if anybody has attempted any of the DIY projects featured in the Christmas issue? Also any thoughts on the item as a whole - did people enjoy it?

Don't forget we are running a competition based around the DIY Photography Projects and want to see the best examples of DIY equipment and images taken with it.

The closing date for the competition has been extended until the end of February, so there is still a few weeks to get your entries in!

    email your entries to -
    apcompetitions@ipcmedia.com

    ... and good luck!

Thanks for the article, there were some good ideas there and I would welcome a similar feature in the future.
Personally it was the "selective focus lens" project that attracted me but I've yet to source a suitable lens however once I do I will definately give the project a whirl. (My interest was given a further nudge after the Lens Baby review this week)!

    Re: Christmas DIY Projects

I found it very interesting and stimulating, thanks Richard. I've been searching the net for other DIY approaches to photography and found this site that is full of DIY projects

I'm definitely looking forward to further articles on the subject

Yes, that's the one I've been intending to have a go at, but just not got round to it.

It was a really good article and I enjoyed it, I'd certainly welcome more of the same.

I was going to make the ring flash but living in posh Harrogate we've got no pound shops to get cheap bowls from to make it!

    Re: Christmas DIY Projects

I had planned to visit our local pound store, but sadly it went out of business - when a 99p store opened opposite!

I fully intended to buy a couple of bowls and try the ringflash, but have to admit that its still on the to do list.

Please keep the feature in every so often, I really enjoyed the ideas.

Would a big tin of Quality Street work instead of the bowl? (or is it Roses that comes in the round tin?....or Celebrations? I'm out of touch )

That way you can add an extra step to eat all the sweeties

I never got those in my stocking, just a shiney blue and silver tin of hard and sweet toffee loveliness, every year.

    Re: Christmas DIY Projects

Just to spoil the thread about toffee tins (and yes, I have seen a ringflash on the 'net built from a sweet tin!), I've actually joined up especially to answer Richard. You lucky man, you!

The article activated my Blue Peter gene, and just had to be done. Though, as someone who's very fond of my old folders, I was a bit miffed at the suggestion that I should rob the lenses off them. But I'm a reactionary fart. I do have a Leitz Micro-Sonnar I could use, though...

I built the diffuser (even if you can use a split 35mm canister...), and found a little cardboard box that an individual Christmas pud' had come in which was already the ideal shape. Cut holes front and back, and Bob's yer uncle! Only taken a couple of snaps to test it, but it does indeed diffuse very nicely. One drawback - all my bokeh is pudding shaped!

I've been held up with the ringflash because I just can't find a cutting mat - hopefully the mother-out-law will get one next time she's in Lakeland - though I do have the identical large bowl. Creepy...

I realised that you must be using autofocus, which I don't have (see my previous comment about aged and flatulent). But I reckon if I use my Nikon F3 I can hang the ringflash off the Nikon flash, and focus by foot. I'll need to block the flash comng forward from the flash head, but I reckon with a bit of foil it will just go back and be re-reflected. We shall see!

Personally I thought it was great fun, and nice to see something that doesn't necessarily cost a shedload of cash.

I've just dug out my copy of the mag and I'll be having a go at two of the projects at least.

Do we have to stick to the AP projects - if not what is the expenditure limit £10 - £20?
