Oh Lord won't you buy me a 300 F2.8L
Many thanks - I've bookmarked it.
I hope I never loose the lens hood for my EF 300 f2.8L but you never know!

Canon lens hoods are copied in China and they are very cheap. I bought one for my 17-85mm lens and it seems to be an exact copy of the Canon hood and works perfectly well.

Very Very clever stuff!
Thank you much.... I also have bookmarked it "just in case".
Who knows. The people responsible might have once worked in a Canon plant and "borrowed" the mould for personal use.Canon lens hoods are copied in China and they are very cheap. I bought one for my 17-85mm lens and it seems to be an exact copy of the Canon hood and works perfectly well.

If I had all the money I've spent on drink, I'd spend it on drink
And good luck to them if they did! Canon lens hoods are a total rip-off. All lenses should be sold with a lens hood. Canon sell their 'L' lenses with a hood so why don't they do that with their other lenses? The hoods are only cheap bits of plastic and it is particularly short sighted of Canon not to include a hood with every lens.

Agreed, but it'll be the way of the world unless everybody kicked up a stink for long enough. Presumably not enough people give a damn.
The only problem I have with my favoured brand is that used lenses are frequently become separated from the hood they were likely sold with decades ago (and a few of those items don't come cheap nowadays, though prices have come down recently).
Mind, even pros can lose hoods in various ways. For super-telephotos a replacement lens hood can cost in the hundreds!

Too right Tim, it is not too long ago that I paid £70+ for a hood to fit a 35mm 'luxThe only problem I have with my favoured brand is that used lenses are frequently become separated from the hood they were likely sold with decades ago (and a few of those items don't come cheap nowadays, though prices have come down recently).

Yup, mine cost €100 from our chums in Vienna.
An IROOA for my newly acquired 8-element Summicron was £39 from Ivor at Red Dot by contrast.![]()

Indeed, a replacement hood for the Nikon 600mm/4 is £562.99...Mind, even pros can lose hoods in various ways. For super-telephotos a replacement lens hood can cost in the hundreds!

Not really - it's probably just a sensible and intelligent commercial practice.it is particularly short sighted of Canon not to include a hood with every lens.
In all the years I've been in photography one thing has remained constant - the overwhelming majority of amateurs I see simply don't use lens hoods. Even in the days when they could be bought in any flavour for a couple of quid from any high street camera shop, that was the case. They still cost only a fraction of the purchase price of the lens, even now that they tend to be much more tailored to specific lenses. Yet almost no-one uses them. So to include them in the purchase price of a kit lens would be a waste - it would force the basic price of the lens up, and thus reduce demand. And all for the sake of something most users apparently aren't particularly bothered about having.
Much more commercially sensible to leave the hood out, get the basic price down as far as possible, and let the few who want them buy them as an optional extra.
Looks good! Shame they dont do Lense hoods for Sonys!
