    Martin Mere

Yesterday I visited Martin Mere which is a WWT owned reserve south of Preston in Lancashire and can recommend it as a place to visit in winter. On their website they have a daily log showing what has been seen on the lake. There are hides covering the lake and feeders. They have a collection of domesticated wild fowl from all over the world to view (close enough if you do not have a long lens). If you are not a member entry is about £9. I will be posting my results on Flickr when I get chance.

Yes. It's one of my favourite spots, but on occasions it can certainly be very cold in the long hide (Zeiss?) overlooking the Mere. This was made worthwhile by seeing what was obviously a family of whooper swans quite close to the hide. I've also had excellent views of Avocets and Kingfishers from the two level hide overlooking the marsh.

Did you know that Martin Mere is all that remains of what was once England's largest lake - bigger in area than Windermere?

The area between Martin Mere and the M6 is also worth exploration, particularly Rufford Old Hall, and also where the Leeds - Liverpool canal has a T-junction to the south east of Burscough. Very picturesque - sorry, I didn't check out the pub.

Marshside in Southport is also worth a visit, lots of hides by the side of the road so you don't have to pay just park up and wander over. There's also a reserve in Fleetwood near the estuary but I've never been to that.

    They must be well hidden!

I didn't see any when I drove fairly slowly along the road!

    Marshside.

I've just found the RSPB map. Reserve Map

Can you think of any reason why it's printed with North pointing SW? Having just refreshed my memory from Google Maps, it threw me completely!

It does sort of make sense in that it follows the direction of the road and the location of the hides alongside it... If you park up on the rough car park near the industrial bit and cross the road there's a hide just nearby. They're in a sort of dip because of the dunes.
