    Paterson Colour Enlarger

    Hi
Just a simple query. I got a cheap Paterson colour enlarger from ebay to do b/w printing with. It has a slide filter box and pretty much nothing else. Well also a UV slide filter - don't know what that is for! I have not got a manual and think there may be something wrong or i am using it incorrectly. The light is not diffusing properly and causing hot spots on the prints. There isn't a condensing lens system so I am guessing it is a diffusion model. I am wondering if there is a part missing. The light just sits on top and goes directly through the filter box. I did find a hand held diffuser but I believe this goes with the exposure meter. Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Phil

Yes... that looks like the model. But doesn't mention a condenser or diffuser. The only clue is the that there seems to be about 10mm more length of black cylinder between the filter box and the negative carrier on that one than on mine... at least suggesting something is missing! On mine there is a gap!

This was a condenser enlarger and it is missing its condenser.

Assuming that your enlarger is missing its condenser you might be able to improvise by putting a suitably sized magnifying glass (or two) where the condenser should have gone. You'll probably have to remove the handle(s). With luck the imperfections of the magnifier shouldn't matter too much to start off with, and this may give you time to search out the correct item. Alternatively, there's suppliers of optical components - but at a price.

    Beware of plastic lenses melting...

    Some prices here
