Edinburgh at night!

I am going to be on a course in Edinburgh in a couple of weeks and although I will be stuck in a classroom in the outskirts of Edinburgh during the day I had hoped to venture out in the evenings to take some snaps, can any one recommend any locations?

I am there for 3 nights, Tues to Thurs, flying back on Friday evening after the course finishes, staying in the Marriott on the Edinburgh Rd.

The Royal Mile, Princes Street the top of Leith Walk area are pretty good if it's lit up buildings you are after. If you get a bus into the centre of town you should find plenty to photograph. There are also plenty pubs for when you get cold (and I suspect you will get cold so wrap up!).

Haven't done any night pics for a while but the ones I have done around town are here. They are all from the centre of town.

The traditional place for night shots of the city is the top of Calton Hill, but it's the traditional venue for other activities after dark, too...

The other place that's good for an overview of the whole city, with the Forth beyond, is the top of Blackford Hill - you can get a taxi to the top.

Aye, and the bushes are missing their leaves so it's easier to find a spot with a view at this time of year.....assuming they haven't put any more lamp posts in daft places. Lamp posts and signs in Edinburgh seem to be positioned by idiots - Dundas Street is a good example of that.

The top of the Hillend ski slope is pretty good for that too....it's rubbish for skiing but the view isn't bad

Very true. The views from all of the "front" hills of the Pentlands are terrific - I think it's the next one along that was Robert Louis Stevenson's favourite view, and for good reason. (Although it is where the photo of my green tights was taken... )

Alternatively, for something festive, in a week or so the German Market will kick in plus the Big Wheel and the skating rink in Princes Street Gardens . . . and Jenner's Christmas Tree! Keep meaning to go in to see the food hall now that Valvona & Crolla have taken it on.

The view into Edinburgh from Salisbury Crags is also nice at night, if it is a clear night the view across the Forth from Cramond is good especially if you get some ships in the view.

I don't know if the christmas lights are on yet but they used to be good.

And there are a lot of buildings lit up and they are always worth a try as the architecture is stunning

Thanks for the tips, I am assuming that it will be quite safe to go to these places after dark, are they quite busy places or should I be wary?

You've been given a few good tips, Calton Hill, Princes Street Gardens etc. Calton Hill for me is the best place to go but to be honest, on your own it's not the safest area, early evening is maybe okay but not later on, too many people "cruising".
Anywhere at the top of the HIgh Street and around the Old Town will provide you plenty opportunity. Enjoy and watch your back.

I recommend (if someone hasn't already) going down to the new scottish parliament at night...it's nicely lit and you can take a shot by the little ponds outside and use the fab lighted 'our dynamic earth' as a background.

It looks a bit like this

Also, bit OT, but, what do you reckon about Bendtner still being first choice striker for the Arse, ukgooner?

Asking questions about a pink-shoed Arse player? Try Calton Hill after dark, or one of the bars past the Playhouse.

AlanW said "plus the Big Wheel"

Could I respectfully point out that it is a Ferris Wheel?

Respectfully,

Looked like a big wheel to me, round, with a hub and spokes!

When are you going or am I too late? I quite fancy heading over and seeing if I can get a decent pic of the Market or Ferris wheel. There's lots going on at Princes street at this time of year.
