Panasonic FZ18 - flash lighting advice

I originally posted this on the Help Team page. I'd be grateful for your advice

I am using a Panasonic FZ18 and would like to know if anybody has used a slave flash (in this case it would be my old SLR zoom flash)to achieve a greater depth of lighting when using this camera. If you have please can you post idiot proof guidance!

Also when shooting close-up with the flash, I find that the flash is too bright. Can you offer any solutions on diffusing the flash in these situations (sometimes I have used a piece of white tissue paper to act as a diffuser)?
