    Scan a bit.....

now and then but only to store in computer. This time I have to scan a number of 6x4 prints so that I can take to the local photo booth or maybe send electronically for printing to 6x9. I will be scanning at 300dpi but unsure whether I need to produce a jpeg or tiff file for the best quality. Anybody know? If tiff, do all print outlets support this type of file? by the way is it only me who finds that this site takes a long time to open?

Hi James. Have a look around at the various posts about the slow site, particularly those about the hamster. The theory is that the site is powered by a hamster on a wheel and that's why it's so slow. It's a subject that causes great angst, see slow server in the current active topics.

Turning to your real query you will theoretically get better quality with TIF but at even 6 x 9 I doubt if anyone would see any difference between a TIF and a JPEG unless you overdo it with the compression of the latter. Most photo booths only accept JPEGs.

I'd scan into TIFs so I can tinker about with them without accumulating artifacts and then convert to JPEGs for the trip down the high street. You may care to try one of the on-line printers. I have been pleased with PhotoBox which always seem to arrive the next day but there are several good ones.
