I suspect that was intended as a figure of speech rather than an exhortation to people to get stroppy with you, Dave. Regardless, I would agree that you have been very friendly, speedy and helpful in trying to resolve issues within the operating scope that you've got (trying to satsify both forum users and advertisers) whenever I've contacted you, and I would encourage anyone who does have a problem to write to you as they would wish to be written to.

....as for clicking somewhere else to close the damn thing - why should I have to? It's unsolicited junk - so why can't I unsubscribe from it.
Because this is a free resource to all of us who use it, despite being owned by a commercial magazine publisher.

Free or not, it shouldn't interfere to the point of distraction, so apologies for the glitches we've had.

Thanks Benchista. Perhaps you could have a word with my Mrs as well. Her emails make the ones about this pop up seem positively jovial.

Problem reported this morning is now sorted.

I don't think it is particularly constructive or helpful to direct your ire at me folks... whoever asks you do it.
With respect, neither's the ad particularly helpful, or constructive - have Casio visited this thread yet?

As Benchist says, it was merely a figure of speech but, having said that you DID leave your email address here for folk to contact you, so I drew attention to it.

IF the ad was working properly (or reasonably - once per session) no one would bother you, and more importantly I (and the moderators) wouldn't have to field the 'IRE' of members who post and PM me about the crap ads molesting them at every turn, telling me they're [****] off, and not coming back!

Get it right and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

I don't load, serve or manage the ad. But I can try and help people who have had problems by bridging the gap between the users of the forum and the team who do that.

I put my address on here to assist you from having to deal with all the complaints you mention, so I'm just saying, asking people to direct their ire at me isnt particularly helpful. As you would if someone asked people to 'direct ire' to your email address.

And actually, the ads on the AP site are helpful and constructive, as without them, we wouldn't be having this conversation either.

And if the adverts drive all of the community away?

Yes, you did, and I pointed that out to yet another dissatisfied member.

BTW: I think you need to get over the semantics 'issue'.

What! You think I'm a mug who doesn't understand the economics of the site...

Anyhoo, I'll say it again (in case you missed the inference); the ads are NOT helpful and constructive if they pi$$ off the membership - resulting in them leaving and/or, in this case, vowing not to buy Casio (just a tad counterproductive, don't you think?).

Absolutely not. Just trying to put a little perspective on it.

It is certainly not in anyone's interest to upset the users on this forum from any perspective, which is why I have managed this as best as I can, by my own choice, not by any edict.

As soon as this campaign is over you will not be bothered by any more pop up ads.

The Casio popup doesn't seem to work properly for me - a standard install of the IE that came on Vista. The popup appears and if I'm lucky I get long enough to click it and get told how far off the perfect shot I am but I've never been able to get as far as actually typing in my details to the page that appears after it. It just dissapears

Thankfully my current Casio camera works a bit better than their ad on here otherwise I'd be worried about buying my next camera off them!

There must be something wrong with my computer, the ad blocker is working, I've not seen the Casio ad at all. And before anyone offers, ------- I don't want to see it either. .

I dunno....as ads go it's quite a fun one trying to time the click right. That's if you're quick enough

    I enjoyed it too.

It's got to the stage that I'll miss it if it goes.

does this ad not come by an install from the forum admin?
Erm, no. Read the thread and all will be revealed...
Who ever signed up for the advert cycle installed a script to allow the popup - ajax, javascript or dhtml, you need to install it into the code of the site, it can't just appear. I blame both. With the moeny the mag makes the forum serves only as marketing to further sales, so don't give me the 'ohh, we need ads to stay alive'. It's shameful. A website costs buttons to run. Furthermore this software on this site is old and dated. Please sort it out! It's evil.

    Someone forum side added this:

MOD: Script removed because it pulled the forum out of shape.

Re: Nasty - Casio Exilim pop-up advert seen on here

I'm sure generations of users will instantly be able to recognise that as a typical "boffin's response", full of technical understanding but with absolutely zero grasp of what's actually happening in the real world. Where the code is inserted has precisely nothing to do with who inserts it, and it's not the forum admin in the sense that any of us know it, so if you're blaming Myk for any part of it, you're just plain wrong. As with the printed mag, the ads are not within the remit of editorial control, never mind the forum admin. Equally, how you know so much about IPC's financial situation is an interesting question - how can you possibly know how this site fits into the overall financial picture? At a time when advertising revenues in the mag are likely to be falling, due to advertisers going belly up, I would think advertising on here is playing an increasingly important role - but I don't know any more than you do.
We all know the software is old and pretty useless, but trying to drive change from an outpost of a major multinational is never easy, believe me - and this is a subject I really do know a lot about. It'll happen, but we can't do anything to hasten it - they can't just do it unilaterally.
