Forum Speed & Reliabilty Issues - Post In HERE!!

OK, we all joke about hampsters but the response on the AP forum recently has been absolutely dreadful. For more than a day I couldn't even upload a first view picture.

I have no idea of the economics of this site. I wouldn't even know how to assess the side benefits to the parent magazine of a highly successful forum, however if the site is continue to be a major force surely someone should be seriously assessing the perfomance and deciding whether to invest or pull the plug.

    Re: New hampster time?

There are times when I get so fed up waiting for the site to do something, including logging out, that I just go to another site.

The speed of this site does somewhat get rather annoying.

Other forums that I use are way faster.

    b) at least you have a choice,

    c) err, that's it...

Dare I suggest that the hamster, being resident in Germany, may be somewhat overwhelmed at the moment by people moving their money about because of the economic crisis.
That aside it is dismally slow and probably benefit from a kindly injection from a vet!

According to flagfox (which shows a flag of the country where the server is situated on the the browser - the AP site is supposed to be in the US.. Maybe it's the time spent waiting in customs while travelling to Germany that's the problem.. I say shoot the flipping thing and install something faster like a ferret..

That's it - it's the US immigration service taking 6 hours to check every packet

It has been truly dire of late and I fear that if something is not done pretty soon that people will simply tire of coming here and the popularity of what is, in my opinion the best photography site on the net bar none, will simply grind to a halt due to neglect . This would be an absolute tragedy and I can only hope that the powers that be at IPC will pay heed to the plea's of Myk and the other AP site team members as well as the entire forum membership who all desperately want to see it rejuvenated. I really don't think it's too much to ask, after all, we don't want or expect anything fancy or expensive..........................just something that works!

... particularly newcomers. One or two tries and waits here and I'm sure many assume it's unused/unloved/broken and disappear never to bother again

I quite agree Will. It must be worse for those doing the courses not being able to access the forum to help with their studies etc.

Can I just say that the forums are an adjunct to the SPI courses, not an integral element. Yes, they do offer students an opportunity to contact each other, which otherwise may not be possible. And yes, students who come online may get some feedback from Garry McNamara (one of several SPI tutors), but that, in essence, is an 'extra'. All students get 'official' private feedback from their individual tutors as part of the 'distance learning' aspect of the course, not via the forum.

Plus, I think it fair to say that there are many more students who do not use the forums than do.

Having said all that, the state of the forum is indeed shocking, and something desperately needs to be done before the community we've established over the last 9 years is lost forever.

Dunno if the MD of Insipid, or the head of the tech department even bother to visit the forums they supposedly support, or if in deed the CEO of IPC knows we exists but, each and everyone of them, IMO, need to pull their thumbs out of their ar$es and recognise what this resource is all about.

At the very least these superannuated clumps could let their customers (the membership of their sites) know what is, or isn't, happening, even an acknowledgement that we exist and the problems we experience are really would be a start!

    NB
AP isn't the only IPC forum suffering from this malaise.

Indeed - WDC have it just as bad.

I would put a smiley there, but I am so disgusted with the situation I can't find a lot to smile about. The only time recently when the performance has been acceptable was in the middle of the night last night when I was the only registered user logged on. For the rest of the time, it's been utterly diabolical and shameful.

I hang my head in shame
If I could edit it I would, as I can't I will write out 100 times "there is no "p" in "hamster".

That apart, is there nothing we can do to raise the the problem with senior management? Possibly an email camapign to the editors of AP and WDC would be a starting point.

I know for a fact they are fully aware of the situation and are as p'd off as we are. I think we need to go higher...

Indeed they do, and indeed they are.

I anyone wishes to rail at someone higher I'd suggest several lines of attack - CC 'em all.

APs Publisher (see the mag for a name & email)
Head of Inspire (yes, a misnomer in this instance, but don't laugh)
Head of InspireTech (whoever that is these days - there was a recent departure)
CEO IPC (Once MD of CALM (Insipid's predecessor) and, IIRC, once publisher of AP)
    CEO Time Inc

Following a couple of links from a search for GC-W, I found this... feedback@ipcmedia.com which might get some sort of response.
