A lot of computer screens being photographed for FirstView today - I guess with this being the 1st of April we're all trying to fool people into thinking that we're actually doing some work! ;-)

We regularly give unwanted stuff to this charity shop - they obviously throw away a lot of it . . . . .
I recall taking quite a bit of stuff (books, electronics, schmutter, etc.) into a Cancer Research charity shop in London in the late 90s.

They made me to wait while they 'checked it'. When they started getting very sniffy about some of the items I told them to forget it, grabbed the bags and took them two doors down to The Heart Foundation charity shop. They accepted everything with glee.

Might be a too little modern for some council planning offices.

It was pi**ing down early this morning, so the computer screen was the first thing I saw clearly (I didn't think that the membership could stand another 1st view self-portrait!)

Great Idea, but it wouldn't get past planning these days! (or building control!).

How many stars would you give the building on the left for energy efficiency then David?

it is really difficult to say, as I have no real idea of the construction or the possible upgrading that may have taken place. But I should think the gas bill is pretty high!

If I could get a commission like that, I think my K20D would be in the bag!!

Gas. Gas? When there are servants to keep the fires burning? Certainly not.

I should imagine that whatever the gas bill it is still a draughty old building.

Re: April, 2008 - FirstView Comments

And here's why I was taking a new set of dark frames.

On Sunday evening I was out photographing Comet C2008/C1 (Chen-Gao) and found the "ghost" of Comet 17P (Holmes) was in the frame of the set I took with 300mm lens. The contrast against the sky background is incredibly low - I couldn't see Comet Holmes at all with or without telescope of binoculars - so I needed to get cancel vignetting as much as possible to as to be able to use horrific amounts of curve correction to enhance the contrast in the toe of the response curve.

Here's the result. Chen-Gao is the small greenish spot which I've marked by enclosing in an ellipse. Holmes is the big amorphous blob at at the top to the right of centre. Uncropped, Canon 5D, stack of 17 x 30 sec at ISO 3200, 300mm f/4, stars tracked using "Astrotrac" mount.

Moderator: image over-size - please remeber the forum image posting rules.

Edit: Sorry - 800 pixels wide is standard on the astro forum I use!

Astronomers call them "stars" Though there is a nice emission nebula (NGC 1579, the small red slpodge right of centre) as well as the pair of comets.

Hot & cold pixels have been processed out by dark frame subtraction.

    God it's a mess!
I'd consider that to be tidy. You've shamed me into tidying up in here, the tables were lost under 6" of accummulated junk, scrap paper/envelopes etc. and now I can see the carpet, I'm going to run the vaccuum round.

Just be thankful I had the 50mm lens on. You DO NOT want to see what it looked like with a wide lens!!
