just had a look at http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0000464.asp and have discovered that there is no Vista driver at present.
keep checking this link and you may find it eventually.
Vuescan (available from http://www.hamrick.com/ ) claims to support the FS4000 and doesn't need the scangear software installed - that might let you use the scanner under Vista.

Thanks Gordon and David. Those are the conclusions I reached. So I guess I'll stick with XP for the time being.

Well the guy from the Gadget Show on C5 had a 4000 and seemed to get his to work under Vista with a Nikon upgrade of some sort. Perhaps emailing the show might be of use?

Now I am really confused
I plugged the FS4000US into Vista with the CDROM in the drive.
When Vista asked for drivers I told it to search automatically.
Then I ran the autorun on the CD to install Photoshop LE.
I downloaded the driver V1.03 from the Canon website, unzipped it, and then told Vista to use the drivers from that folder. I rebooted, and then ran Photoshop, selected my Twain32 device (the FS4000), and I'm away with the faries!!!
