I don't want to interrupt David's 5D thread either, but could I repeat Robs' question. Can anyone advise the issue with the 70-300? and the possible recall. I have no problem with mine (as far as I know!) Thanks - John

There have been reports of a problem with the 70-300 IS when using it in portrait orientation. Canon are investigating the issue.

Yes thanks for the info guys.
They keep it nice and generic and dont say whether it is all of them or just a batch. And I like the way they say they are deciding on the solution - surely it is either a) they will do nothing or b) they will recall / repair them. Cant actually see any other alternative!
After all the waiting and effort of just getting hold of this lens, I will be really narcked if mine has this issue. Pain of it is, I am have shot loads of stuff with this lens at 300mm in India and am shipping films home so have no idea if my shots are suffering...guess I will just keep my fingers crossed until the end of the trip.

Rob, if it's any help, I've not seen this problem with my lens. It only occurs in portrait format at the tele end - I suspect it happens if you don't support the lens properly, but I can't be sure about that.
Mine has the problem. If your lens doesn't have any lateral movement at full zoom in landscape position you should be OK.Mine has lateral movement & has definite softness in portrait mode, not only at the edges but at the centre as well.
Can't detect any.
Sorry if I am being dumb, but what do you mean by "lateral movement"?
Dont understand what I am meant to be looking for.
Thanks for the help.
Rob
If you look down on the lens in the full zoom position the end can be moved sideways. So in the portrait position the end of the lens can sag down slightly presumably moving the internal elements thus causing the soft images.
It seems lenses with a 0 or 1 as the third digit of the serial number are the ones affected. Canon USA have issued this:

Has anyone got a clue what Canon Europe is going to do?
John

Unfortunately we are still waiting for the statement (tentatively planned for the end of June 2006) concerning the issue with this lens.
We apologize for the delay in this statement, but we have no information at this time on its release.
