    Kyo L4v for the axe?

i wonder if you can suggest any trouble-shooting on this -

my camera, [a Kyocera Finecam L4v], previously of good behaviour, although taking pics in the 'normal' way, seems to have recently picked up a weak link in its transfer system to pc [XP Pro].

with the possible exception of pics in camera no longer carrying sequence nos, all seems normal with it. however. on using a USB to transfer, it makes the right noises, but there is no reaction from the pc, particularly no Photowizard? box, or whatever it was called. nor can i find anything of a similar name in software list.

    USBs tested ok.

there is a CD with the camera, but it wasn't reqd. for Wind. XP at installation. [separate scanner is normal & produces its own wizard box etc on switch-on].

cable has previously been in top port at front. putting cable in bottom one elicited new hardware found, which it subsequently seemed 'happy with' but could take operation no further.

    any ideas pls??

    thanks v m

    Use a card reader.

    1) reformat the card in camera a couple of times. This often cures any quirks caused by file and/or folder corruption; these can build up if you only ever delete the images after transfer. Deleting a file does not wipe the actual file data merely the file address from the file management structure. Reformatting the card in camera wipes all the information including any unwanted data and the file structure and re-installs the file management structure as it should be.

    2) if this doesn't work it could equally be a failed card - unless it happens with all cards if you have several. If the latter is the case then the camera may have to make a trip to hospital................

OK, then. Can you spot the camera or card reader with Windows Explorer when connected? If so, you can use that to copy the files, if not then either the card is faulty or you've got a computer problem, I think - possibly a virus.

Thank you both very much for your suggestions on this. It has been solved.

The villain of the piece, it seems, is a prog called RealPlayer. This was installed as part of a radio archive requirement. At the time there was no reason to make any connection with the camera's failure.

It seems that RP has been the cause of black magic elsewhere. I will leave the following link in case anyone should be interested in venturing into the dark woods. You are strongly advised to leave a trail more substantial than breadcrumbs ....
