    Train reflections (3)

I took a similar one of these last year. Recently I was in Kingswear Station and took these three of reflections on Lydham Manor. I'm thinking of putting one of them into a club competition and would welcome any comments, particularly which one you think is the best of them.

    Thanks

No1 is the best of the three for me, but I would trim the left hand side. The writing on no3 is out of focus.

The chimney one for me. It's more obviously about the reflections, and I love the colours of the brasswork.

i like No1, the other two not really.

The technical error (focus) in 3 spoils it, and I don't like the framing in 2 (the superfluous bits of sky in the top corners)

The real problem with 1 and 3 is quite simply that the reflections do not really seem to be of anything in particular, they are just reflections in paintwork. At least there seems to be something half recognisable in 2. I don't really fully agree about the top corners here, they give shape and the understanding that it is a copper capped locomotive chimney. Competition entries, not sure that these will be viewed favourably.

I think the first was really an upright with a bit more below. Agree with Phil on the others. Sad about the focus on third, as it would have been best for me.

Thanks for the comments - very useful.

Back - I hadn't thought of doing a portrait version of that. I'll have a look at the original and a re-edit.

Chimney - I started without the bits of the sky in the corners. I thought it needed them to give it a bit of context. I even thought of presenting it upside down (ie with the reflection the right way round). I agree about the colours of the brasswork.

Side - Yes, I can see the softness of the focus. I really like the colours in the reflection. Maybe I can get another one next year.....

    Thanks again.

Try the vertical pipe about on a third and crop at the widest point of the half moon reflection at the top. Hopefully with just a bit more below.

I had a quick go at a portrait version of the back reflection. I tried various crops and hthis is the one I preferred:

To me it makes more sense of the elements you have.

Thanks, Mike. It has got rid of those little brackets on the sides. As you say, it makes more sense now.

The cropped version onnumber 1 is much better but my preference is for the third, the side view.

To me it's a picture about colour so let's really make it about colour...

Done by duplicating the image twice and switching them to overlay mode. I also added some sharpening to the second layer to compensate for the slight focus issue...

    Yep, that's what it's about.
