Hello hope this is not to much of a silly question but i am a newbie.I have just bought the EOS400D and after watching the DVD that came with this months mag i started to look at image size of my new pic in CS2.It said on the DVD for printing you should be looking at a resolution of about 300.When i look at the resolution of my new pics they are only 72..? When i pull pics up from a very old digital camera they all have a resolution of 300....? Now i am very confussed and would be greatfull for any one to help clear this up........
It's not really a problem. Your images are, in pixel terms, whatever size your camera produces. For the 400D this is 3888x2592 (assuming you are using it at its full resolution). The two variables are: 1. How big you print your pictures. 2. How many pixels per inch you print them at.
These things are related by a very simple and fairly obvious formula: pixels per inch = pixels / length of print in inches.
So, if you print a photo with a length of 10 inches, the pixels per inch will be 3888/10 = 388.8
If you want to print at exactly 300 pixels per inch, you must make the length of the print 3888/300 = 12.96 inches.
You can change the default assumed pixels per inch in preferences (assuming it's like Elements that I use).
Many thanks John for the replay, On the DVD it just made it sound that to print good quality they should be a 300 resolution and got a bit worried when mine was just 72. Glad it does not make much difference. Many thanks for helping a newbie in this very confusing world of digital cameras..
