Can I use BP511 batteries in a Canon 50D as well as BP511A Sorry to ask this but it is a trifle confusing to me. Mike

Yep - you can use them, but they won't last as long.
When I changed to the 40D from the 300D it went from the BP511 to the BP511A and I got rid of all of my 511's (but kept the 7day ones as they have a higher (but not as high as the 511A) mAh).

If they're fresh, a BP-511 lasts about 85% of the time a BP-511A lasts for - continuous use at 0-5C.
In "normal" use, I very much doubt you'll notice any difference.

I have a mixture and I've yet to notice anything.
I find it's the camera that makes more difference as my D30 eats batteries far quicker than the 20d or 40D...
