Digicam for a new starter

My partner's sister is embarking on a photography course and needs a camera. Whist I have extolled the virtues of learning the basics using a manual, or at least something with PASM modes she is adamant that she wishes to use a digital compact as she does not wish to be 'bothering with film'. Does anyone know of a compact digicam with some level of manual control around the £100 mark? I suspect we may have to consider S/H models.

I would advise her to ask the course tutor what is required. Then go from there.

Canon A590 IS is still available new at Warehouse Express for about £85. You cancheck it out on DPreview.
