Hi, I am looking for a DSLR with GOOD QUALITY images, I am a first time user, though I am keen to learn and pick up quick, I had a look at some reviews and notice that the Canon 500D, Nikon D90, and Nikon D5000 are the most up to date cameras in the market at the moment..
I wanted help in choosing one, I want to spend around £500, but don’t know which make/brand, or which camera SONY, Canon, Nikon??
Would be glad if you guys out there can help!!
Thanks

Hi and welcome to the forum
As you can imagine this is a question asked at least twice a week - I'm sorry there is no answer. There is no best camera.
Have a look at this recent thread (there are many more on the subject).
Good luck

Hello,
If I was just buying my first DSLR I think I'd get one with in body image stabilisation. That would rule out Nikon and Canon so I think I'd look at Sony, Samsung, Pentax and Olympus.

Hi,
sorry what do you mean by "in body image stabilisation"? and why do you recommend that?

Modern cameras can counteract shake when hand-holding the camera by using electronically controlled image stabilisation (IS) making it possible to use slower shutter speeds without getting blur than was formerly possible.
There are two methods in use - either the sensor in the camera is moved (in-body IS) or by moving an extra element in the lens (lens based IS).
In-body IS works with any lens fitted to the camera. This is probably why Alan made the recommendation.
Lens IS is fitted to a limited range of the camera maker's lenses and they are dearer than the non-IS versions.
Nikon and Canon use lens-IS all the others use body-IS.
There have been countless discussions and tests of the efficiency of the competing systems with really no clear winner.

Not really - just buy whichever camera you find most comfortable to use and has the facilities which best suit your needs.
The camera body is perhaps the least important part of the image making business. More important is the bit behind the camera and the bit on the front

I think the Nikon is probably the better choice though it and the Canon 500D are pretty similar. Maybe the Canon has a slight edge in the way it processes the raw files into jpegs but it's marginal. I would say the Nikon because (a) the "kit" lens is rather better than the one that comes with the Canon and (b) the articulated TFT monitor is a real bonus especially if you are going to use the Live View option.
My main system is Canon, so you can see that I'm not being partisan here!

Canon and Nikon have IS lenses but as far as I'm aware there are no IS primes and few if any IS wide angle lenses, none that I know about anyway.
As my most used lenses are a 12-24mm zoom and 20, 30 and 50mm primes I'm IS-less. The advantages of being able to use a low ISO and avoiding the dubious pleasures of sledgehammer noise reduction whilst keeping an acceptable shutter speed are obvious to me, the use of a tripod and longer exposures are not always possible.
From what I've read on the rumour sites (that have proved to be accurate in the past) both Canon and Nikon have working in body IS systems and are just waiting for the right moment (or putting off introduction as long as possible and hoping that they don't have to) but at the moment the joys of an IS prime are not available to me, a Canon user.
If I was starting again today I'd definitely look for an IS body, but that's just me.

I didn't know that but they ain't common though are they? I don't know of any Canon's, but I could be wrong.
The only one I have is a 70-300mm although "standard" zooms are more common these days.
