Hi guys. My quest for a sub £400 wideangle lens was almost over when i decided on a sigma 10-20mm, however before i bought it i saw the tamron 10-24mm, which was cheaper and had the extra zoom. But I was wondering which is best for landscapes. I am sitting in Italy in our appartment wondering which would be best for pictures of lake maggiore. It is so beautiful and I cannot wait to get my hands on new glass. But which one??
I want to buy here in Italy as I am only here for 2 weeks and my trip draws to a close only 2 days after your review of both is published. Thanks

If you go to www.dpreview.com you'll find reviews of both these lenses. Their lens reviews include a set of scientific tests and the site allows you to compare two lenses. I found it particularly instructive to look at the checkered patterns for the two lenses, especially at the corners of the frame - hovering the mouse over any of the small patches shown on the test results will open up a bigger view of it. It takes a while to understand what's going on but the site does provide a good explanation and there's a lot of useful information to be gleaned from it.
For what it's worth, I was in exactly the same position earlier in the year and, on the basis that all the reviews I read for the Tamron lens said it went very soft in the extreme corners, and having seen dpreview's test results, I decided to go for the Sigma and have been very pleased with it.

We've just done a group test of four superwide zooms for our August issue:
Sigma 10-20mm EX DC HSM Sigma 12-24mm EX DG HSM Tamron 10-24mm Di II LD IF Tokina 12-24mm DX AT-X Pro
The Sigma 10-20mm was the clear winner, gaining a 92% rating. The Tamron is visibly softer and fared the worst in the group. It seems the extra range may have over-extended its optical capabilities.
For the record, our lens tests are conducted by qualified physicist and ex-pro photographer Jon Tarrant using Imatest analytical software as well as real world testing. I'm confident you'll find them every bit as trustworthy as dpReview's lens tests, if not as slick in their presentation.
Incidentally, the August issue goes on sale 10th July.

Is that the original version or the latest fixed aperture model?
