Wideangle, good zoom, viewfinder, fits in handbag. Bridge or compact?
      #805198 - 26/06/2009 16:07

I don't know if what I want is out there and seem to be going round in circles at moment.

I started years ago with a Fuji FinePix 4900 and was happy with that except that it was a bit big for putting in pockets/handbags. Changed to a Nikon Coolpix7900 which fitted into pockets fine BUT I didn't realise when I bought it that what I see through the viewfinder is not exactly what goes on the memory card.

Now need/want to change again but not sure what to go for. I take mainly landscapes, quite often with water in. I'd like a wideangle lens and a more powerful zoom than the 3x or 6x I've got at the moment.

I also take quite a few closeups outdoors of things like spiders webs with dew on, frost etc. Plus dawn and dusk photos.

I want the ability to take shots that will print at A0 or larger.

I want a viewfinder where what I see through the viewfinder is the image which will go on the memory card.

Am I going to find a compact that has these features or do I need to go to a bridge? If I go to a bridge then am I back to having a camera which is too bulky?

My budget is up to around the £500 mark but I don't want to 'overbuy'. I'm pretty much a point and shoot merchant.

I've been considering the Canon Powershot SX1 IS or SX10 IS and the Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ28. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Yes - I know A0 is big; but some of my shots have been used as brochure covers and it would have been good to have been able to get them printed up to go on the back wall of a stand at a trade show.

Presumably I could Photoshop a good quality smaller image up to that size. If not, then if getting really big prints is too much of an ask, I suppose I'd be looking more for capability at A2/A3 size and forget about the odd occasion when a big print would have been nice to have.

(Edited to clarify A0 sizing)

For A2 you need something around 25MP if you are to meet the 300dpi standard. Following on from that you'd need about 100MP for the same resolution at A0 although it is generally accepted that the resolution can be reduced due to the greater distance from which the print is likely to be viewed. The long and short of it is that you'll not get photographic quality at A0 from a compact.

What you need is the best quality pixells commensurate with the portability you require. Although looking at my wife's handbags a 10 x 8 monorail might suit.

The new Olympus micro4/3 has a unique combination of largish sensor size and compact form factor. I'd certainly have a look at it.

A0, now that's a tall, & very wide order for any compact / bridge camera.

I'd go for any of the following, camera wise;

Bridge: Canon SX1, Sony HX1.
Compact: Panny TZ7, Fuji F200exr, Canon G10 or Panny LX3.

How about a compact bridge digicam ?? :D [Re: pagallery]

I am thinking of the Canon Powershot SX200 IS which gives you everything you require (**except
a viewfinder* but the Canon LCD screens work exceptionally well in bright sunlight ...something I wish
other manufacturers would pick up on ) and the SX200 IS is available at Jacobs Photo/Video for £289 along with a £40 rebate and other shops you may frequent.

On another note, I have to agree with the folks above that I don't believe a compact digital
with give you the image quality desired -- at least not for your size requirements -- simply
due to the (much) smaller sensor size in the compact digi's compared to the DSLR's ....but, hey,
you will be the judge of that

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Jack

Touche Chris but I kinda like a little lens wiggle but must admit that I am
not too fond of the "flash always being up"

Cheers,

Investing in Genuine Fractals as a PS plug-in should give A0 enlargement easily enough but to be honest if that is the main reason for buying then you really need something more than a Bridge/Compact.

You're not asking a lot are you!

Just to add to what has already been said, no compact will give you good A0 prints, nor any bridge cameras either really. But leaving that aside, the compacts that come closest to your other requirements are the Panasonic TZ7 and Canon SX200. Both cameras are good, but in our head to head between these models the TZ7 was the clear winner.

Of course neither has a viewfinder.

The new Olympus E-P1 Pen would be close too, but the clip on viewfinder only works with the 17mm pancake lens (it doesn't zoom). Its also bigger and more expensive.

In summary I come back to your first sentence. No, what you want is not out there at the moment.
