Gower (4 images)
      #804621 - 24/06/2009 22:16

I have just returned from a week in the Gower - most of the time was family time but I did manage to sneak out for a couple of forays with only the camera in hand. I took so many I don't know where to start, but here are a few that float to the top.

First, the family bit. I know people believe any picture of their child/pet is adorable but I selected this as being a relatively generic "child enjoying the beach" portrait that hopefully appeals on more than just a "aaaah, int she cute" way.

Now a couple from Oxwich Castle - I tried to find images that had some compositional appeal rather than record shots of a ruin (of which I also have plenty!)

And finally to Rhossili. I have to admit to going to this beach with the sole intent of getting "the" picture. Unfortunately I took loads which leaves me trying to sift the wheat from the chaff. This appeals as it is not simply a "sunset over beach" image (of which I have many!), but includes some water and sky formations that draw one into the image.... or maybe not!

All are lightly tickled with levels and unsharp masking. The 2nd castle image is also slightly desaturated. All taken on a D200 with either AF-Nikkor 18-70 or Sigma 10-20. The Rhossili image used a tripod*.

* Funny story about that - I set the camera up on the tripod and settled in for the evening. I was taking shots every so often as the light changed when a rather larger wave appeared than all the previous ones (the tide was coming in). I wasn't dressed for paddling so I scarpered up the beach, leaving nigh-on £1000 of camera kit in the sea . I figured I could retrieve it all between waves, which fortunately was the case.

Your pic of Rhosilli, with the Helvetia wreck in foreground is a fine shot.Personally, I have never stayed on Rhosilli beach after dark, but your shot inspires me to try.

Definitely worth the effort. On that night I shared the beach (in fact almost shoulder-to-shoulder at times) with another chap looking to do exactly the same thing as me.

I also wish I'd taken a longer lens because there were surfers as the sun went down which would have made some great atmospheric shots.
