I met up with an old school friend a few weeks back. He had a school photo of us when we were in the 3rd year (I must have been about 13 or 14).
The picture was one that was very wide and not very tall. If I remember, the camera was mounted on a tripod and panned from one end of the group to the other.
As the shutter would've been open for some time to get all the students in, how come the picture wasn't overexposed (no digital in those days!!).

My guess is the lens pivoted in an arc and the film was on a curved backplate. Thus each part of the film received the same exposure as the lens passed.

not read the wiki, but with the cameras that they used - if you were at the start you could whip round the back of the group and get yourself on twice by going to the other end before the camera panned round.

Much slower film - possibly 25-50 ASA/ISO and small aperture to ensure those at the back were in focus.

Eldest daughters whole school photos were done on just such a system-they had a member of staff positioned (out of view) at the back to stop such tricks
