Hi Guys,
have an A200 and am using an HVL-58AM Sony flash. To operate it wirelessly I need to raise the in camera flash. Don't want this all the time, and would like to purchase a different trigger. Could you give me your thoughts on what might be the best solution here. My photography is mainly Landscape,and general subjects. Portraiture is something I hope to do more of in the future.

Although I have Sony dSLRs I'm not a user of flash so others may have more information. So far as I'm aware you must use the pop-up flash to send Infra Red (IR) signals to the flashgun to use it wirelessly. If the added light from the pop-up flash is not wanted (although it contributes very little in this situation) a temporally attached IR filter or a piece of exposed and processed 35mm film leader will block visible light whilst still passing IR to control the gun.

I have actually done that, and it does get round the problem. Just wondered if there was anything a little more professional.

The only thing I can think of is the Minolta IR Wireless Flash controller unit which attaches to the hotshoe and can if memory serves control up to 3 wireless flash units, however would not guarantee that it would still work with the latest Sony flash units

dug out the wireless flash trigger and tried it on the A900 with the Minolta 5600 HSD flash, and the trigger don't function on the A900, so this is not an option, I do hope that Sony think about producing their own trigger which will work with all their flashes, as the wireless flash capabillity of the Minolta system was a major selling point for a lot of photographers.

The old minolta controller does not work with A900, but the recently announced and not yet available HVL-F20AM flash has wireless control for the A900.
For an A200 though and a 58, why not use the onboard flash? a more "professional" option is to use radio triggers like the Elinchrome skyport or if you are rich the pocket wizzards, but then you only have manual control of the flash power not TTL.
If you want to keep it simple, use the pop up with the Sony wireless and TTL in my view.
