Cannot see RAW files with my new 5D MkII ... help!
      #800994 - 14/06/2009 10:18

I am currently unable to upload the RAW files from my new 5D MkII .. this was not a problem with my 5D

My files are captured to the latest format Sandisk CF Extreme IV (8GB) and I use Photoshop Elements 3 (v.3.0.1) with the appropriate Camera Raw plug-in for processing, which has been working perfectly well up to now. However, when I select RAW files captured with my new camera they won't migrate, I just get a message in the window that proclaims "The file is damaged or is a format that cannot be included in the Organiser"

Can anybody help me please? I'm still able to work with the jpegs produced (camera set to RAW + jpeg/L) so all is not entirely lost, but I really need to be able to see my CR2 files!

Has there been an update the Adobe RAW tat includes the 5D MKII ?

If not, it won't recognise the file format.

Have you tried just opening the CF card within windows (not via adobe) and copying them to your computer?

Thanks Fen (like the new picture by the way!) ...

Your suggestion that my version of Camera Raw doesn't recognise 5D MkII files is probably correct

My usual work stream is to download my captured files to a folder on my C:/Drive (work related stuff that is synchronised with a central server is held on an H:/Drive). At this point I have never been unable to view any of the CR2 files; only when I've selected them in Elements and migrated them across to the organiser for processing do they become visible (this has always been the case ever since I downloaded the Camera Raw plug-in). Once they're in the organiser I can see them and I can then carry on as normal. It's just that the CR2 files from my 5D MkII don't seem to want to migrate

If I need to update the Camera Raw to recognise 5D MkII file format, how do I do that please?

Many thanks

Use DPP supplied with the camera. It has some advantages over ACR and has an option to open the converted file in Photoshop. I use both, depending upon what it is I need to do to the file.

Thanks Wheelu ... if I do use DPP will I have to open both it and Elements to process images or will it, like the system I currently use, automatically open manipulated RAW files as jpegs in Photoshop? (You may have answered this already but I'm not very software savvy I'm afraid)

Many thanks

Just one more query here ... is ACR 5.3 compatible with PSE 3.0.1?

Thanks

And if there has been updated , it will not work with PSE3, you will need the current version of PSE or PS CS4 / light room
For the time being you can always use EOS Utility and DPP which would have come with your new camera. Save the processed file as a TIF and open in your current version of PSE. The current version of DPP is well worth looking at as it will give you lens corrections for fall off distortion and CA.

Edit: Sorry I may have been looking at a cached version of this page, I could not see any posts after Fens first reply.

I use DPP with Photoshop CS3. DPP will open images directly in Photoshop for further editing as 16 bit TIFF files, it does not matter whether or not PS is open when you do this, as DPP will cause the program to start.

I don't know if this will work with Elements. However, as has been suggested, you can save the TIFFs to disc and then open them in Elements.

No.

See the Adobe Camera Raw pages on the Adobe website for more information.

A big thank you to everyone for their input. I've finally decided to do the decent thing and replace my trusty PSE 3 with PSE 7 (I've still only got this little laptop so I hope it will cope okay; plans are afoot for a proper PC by September). I just cannot afford CS4, plus I doubt I'll ever need a fraction of it. However, I realise that PSE 7 still lacks Curves and a Channel Mixer ... can anyone steer me towards a couple of reliable plug-ins compatible with PSE 7?

Thanks again
