Hi,
Been looking at a new camera for a while and I have it down to either Samsung WB500 or Panasonic DMC-TZ7.
Both have wide angle lenses and good optical zoom and seem to have similar features and I can't decide between them.
I was initially drawn to Panasonic due the reviews both professional and user based but am now stuck between the two.
Appreciate any thoughts.

Have you handled them both?

The Panasonic TZ7 has AVCHD Lite (720p movie), with the Samsung similarily matching at 720p. The Samsung takes the lens zoom range to a class-winning 24mm-240mm, but it's really sloppy at the long end, especially in low light. The Panasonic likely pips it here, partly down to the longer 25-300mm 12x range (ok so it's not quite as wide, but it's pretty close). They're very closesly matched cameras though, for me, the TZ7 is better designed. Indeed the Samsung WB550's flash is in the most foolish of places, making it very hard not to cover with a finger. The Panasonic has better placement, plus a smaller body and the company has more experience with compact cameras in the market.

Having originally posted a thread that i wasn't getting on with the TZ7 as it seemed to display dull flat colours on the monitor and so i assumed the camera was faulty, i subsequently discovered that the LCD Monitor setting (it has three options) was on a dull setting which was displaying obviously dull coloured pictures and once that was changed onto the brightest setting and the white balance was rebalanced - BINGO my world has not been the same since. My camera and i go everywhere together now and we have bonded beautifully. This camera takes excellent photos, excellent true life colours, fantastic video images and zoom facility and i can't stop raving about it. So please forgive my original rant and buy the TZ7. I hope for any sales i may have lost Panasonic through my initial negative experience that i am trying to make up for it by impressing everyone i meet and now everyone wants to buy this camera!
