In the past when I've inserted my CF card into the built in card reader I've been offered the option to transfer the images to the computer using 'Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard'.
When I accepted that option the thumbnails were shown on the screen and I was able to transfer. I was also offered the option of naming the group of pics and also choosing the destination file.
Now I do the same thing and the wizard tells me that there are no pictures on the card. I know that the pics are there and I'm able to find and transfer them maunally.
To my knowledge I've changed nothing. Does anyone know how to get back to where I was?

Well it's the first time that I seem to have stumped you brainy people. 
I googled my fingers to the bone with no luck and then found that my little Sony point n' shoot worked perfectly.
That led me to my main camera. I altered lots of settings to no avail and finally did a 'factory reset'. I also renamed the camera default storage folder (that it puts on the CF card).
All is now well - I wish that I knew why.

Have you tried re-installing the camera driver? PCs do seem to lose drivers for no apparent reason, so this could be the answer. Does the computer recognise the camera when you plug it in to the computer? Other than that, try Windows Help, and search for Microsoft Scanner and Camera Wizard.

Thanks Roy,
As I said in the first post I'm using a built in card reader - not the camera.
Also as I said in the first post it does recognise the card but says that there are no pictures on it.
Finally, as I said in the second post, I've Googled the wizard until my fingers bleed and although there's plenty about the autoplay not working there's nothing that I can find about my particular problem.
All the same I appreciate your thoughts.

Card readers are perhaps not the most robust bits of kit that we own. If it has had a lot of use it may be dirty or even broken. Try an external reader via a USB port before you get into the depths of the software minefield.

I'd ruled out hardware issues because the card was 'seen' but the files on it were not. I had also ruled out viruses because I'm heavily protected and run scans (and malware scans) regularly.
In fact, though, if I chose the 'open folder to view contents' then all was fine. If I chose the 'transfer to computer' option it said that it couldn't see any files.
As I said above I found that my Sony compact worked fine but the main camera didn't. Now I've altered some settings on the camera it works again. Quite what I altered I don't know because I did a 'revert to factory settings' action. I can only assume that the files are being saved somehow differently and now the wizard sees them.

What file format were you using?
Is it possible that the wizard only recognises jpeg and you were using RAW?
