Was doing my usual download of updates for Windows vista and wondered why it was taking so long. It transpired that my computer was downloading Windows Vista Service Pack 2 at nearly a whopping 350mb! No wonder it was taking a while! Hope the computer mags bring it out as a freebie on disk soon cause I don't fancy downloading that every time I do a clean install on a Vista system!
Big(but not as big as Vista service pack 2! )Will

Reckon that'll take 20 hours to download via my moby and use up over a third of my monthly data allowance. Don't think I'll bother.

Well yes, I suppose he will provided he's got Vista set up to notify him about updates but not download them automatically. (which is the way I have it but I chose to download service pack 2). If you've been updating Vista incrementally up until now then I doubt that SP2 will contain anything you don't already have but if you haven't and you've got a slow connection/download limit then it would probably be best to keep an eye out for it on disk.................assuming that computer mags provide such a service as they did with XP's service pack 2?

Or you could ask a friend to download the service pack and put it on a CD/memory stick.
I downloaded it and installed it last night but I didn't use the Windows Update method so I can save the file for use again if need be.

Indeed Meredith, that is certainly an option and one you would be wise to choose if you envisage having to install SP2 on more than one PC.

I did that for SP3 for XP, when I was reinstalling windows after a hard drive glitch, so at least the next time, it'll still be available to me
[Sitting on the hard drive backup, and an old memory stick I have, so at least I should still haev a copy then ]

I've got automatic updates switched off for most things as my PC is rarely connected to the net and the error messages get annoying. Can be quite happily slaughtering wee blue guys in Civ and it'll jump back to the desktop to give me an error message if I leave them on
I update the 3rd party firewall and virus thingy now and again but that's about it. If it ain't broke why fix it?

Think yourself lucky Will. I assume you must be using the 32bit version? The equivalent download for the 64bit version is listed at 567.3Mb

567.3Mb ? For those of us who remember the Commodore Vic 20 and the 'Run a City on this machine' Sinclair, that does seem like a huge number. My, how things have changed

Don't get me going. The first computer that I used (in 1956) had 1.6Kb of memory using delay line storage, a magnetic drum backup store of 32Kb and needed a large air-conditioned room.

Very much faster than what? And after installing, just how much more disc space is taken up with SP2 than without? Anyone know?

I have my PC set to automatically download and install updates and was wondering whether it had already installed SP2. On checking I find that I'm still on SP1. I thought I would go to Windows Update and check. On performing a 'Check for Updates' it doesn't come up in the list of important, or even optional, downloads. I wonder why. Perhaps the daily check and automated install means that I don't need it.

On this machine, it was available yesterday. On my daughter's, it was available at 6.30 p.m. today, but on my son's, not 'til 7.45. Of all of them, mine was the most up-to-date beforehand. I suspect MS are using some technique to stagger the downloads so as to protect their servers.
