second hand camera
      #795612 - 27/05/2009 08:42

hi and thanks for taking the time to try and help out. I am after a second hand digital SLR as my first proper camera but it s such a mine field i really don't know where to start.
My primary use for the camera will be to put pics on my web site/ face book etc so am not really concerned about being able to print large photo's etc. The main feature will be that i can take multiple shots quickly .... mainly portrait / people pics .. i tend to travel a lot on my own and need a camera that i can control via remote control or cable fo r self portraits against landscape backgrounds, am fed up of trying to use the timer function on compact cameras.... i seem to spend ages trying to get that perfect shot / pose!!! as this would be my first slr and a bit of an experiment i am not looking to spend more than about £150 .... can anyone suggest a make and model that would provide me with what i need????.... thanks

You should be able to pick up an old Nikon D50 or Canon 350D for about that, and either should do you fine. You can pick up a Hama remote unit for around £20 - either a cable or infrared version - for either. It might also be worth looking the Olympus range, something like the E500

I've used all 3, and the E500 is no match to either the D50 or 350D, it was much slower in use with a viewfinder like a long narrow dark tunnel with a square of light at the end. Another minus is actually sourcing cheap lenses, Oly are a lot harder to find than either Nikon or Canon.

I think either the D50 or 350D will be more rewarding and keep a new user satisfied for longer than the E500.
