About to make my first DSLR purchase and was planning on the A300. However, the Operating System (whatever that is) is not compatible with Windows Vista which I have on my PC.
I'm a real rookie. Can someone explain what this means and whether it is a real problem?

There should not be a problem provided you update the drivers. See here.

Thanks for that. Do the drivers just let me connect the camera to the PC to enable me to download images? Will I still be able to install and use the software that comes with the camera?
Sorry for being such a pain, but I really am hopeless and confused about this...

You'll be able to download the images okay. You may even find that the software supplied with the camera works if it's the latest version - if not download the files in the link I gave you. It's only the early version of Sony's own photo editing software that was sometimes a problem with Vista.

When you connect your camera to your PC you will be able to view or import the images directly without any program, however if you want to manipulate your images a Photo Editing program will be required, Sony's own software is OK but I would suggest Photoshop or Photo Impact, cut back versions are available free to download from their websites

Not if working in RAW.
