Opening Photoshop CS3
      #793926 - 19/05/2009 19:19

Hi,
When I open CS3, I am presented with a blank workspace, apart from the tools palette down LHS and the other palettes down RHS. Exactly as I would expect. A pal also used to have this, but now when he opens CS3 he is presented with the 'New' dialog box in the middle of his workspace, as though he has clicked File > New, but of course he hasn't ! Can anyone please suggest how to get it back to opening with a blank workspace please ?
Thanks, Alan.

View>workspace>default_workspace ... might do the trick.

Thanks Rog, but I think that he's tried that already.

It's possible he's got a script or action running when PS starts. You can check this by File -> Scripts -> Script Events Manager.

Thanks Chris, I'll get him to try that. I'll let you know the result.

Chris,
Sorry, but that didn't work either I'm afraid. There were no scripts or actions running on start-up.

Next !

Thanks again,
Alan.

You could try deleting your preferences by selecting ctrl+alt+shift (Windows) or cmd+alt+shift (Macintosh) while launching Photoshop.

Still no good, I'm afraid Norman.
It's looking like an uninstall and reinstall, unless anyone can think of anything else to try.
Thanks for all your help, so far.
Alan.

Is he opening PS from a shortcut? If so you might like to try double clicking on the photoshop.exe file directly. If that works delete the shortcut and create a new one.

The only other thing I can think of is that the default application setting might have got corrupted if he is in the habit of starting PS by double clicking a .jpg file etc.

Norman, thanks for your continued interest. Yes he does open from a desktop shortcut, so I'll get him to try direct from the .exe file.
AFAIK he doesn't open CS3 by d/clicking jpegs etc. I believe his jpeg files open with Windows Picture & Fax Viewer.
I'll get back to you and let you know how we get on.
Thanks, Alan.

Good Morning All,
Just a quick update. Over the weekend we tried the various fixes that had been suggested, I sat with him because I wasn't convinced he'd already done as he was told ! !
Hovever, nothing improved the situation, so we uninstalled then reinstalled CS3 and everything is back just as it should be, CS3 opens with a blank workspace !
Thanks for all your interest, I guess we'll never know what caused the prob in the first place.
Thanks again,
Alan.
