After another fruitless weekend I still cant seem to get this module two right. I have tried a few different places but nothing seems to be showing any differences when I use the different metering methods.
Did anyone else have these problems or am I doing something wrong? Or maybe just picking the wrong places?
The grey card is the only thing that seems to change anything so I think the camera is working - just not my brain lol
Help?

hi
I am having the same stuggles so i have decided to give that module a little break and look into the other modules managing to complete mod 3 today.
i thought looking into the others and giving meself a break on 2 might help me to get my thinking cap on right to retackle it.
really need to crash course all of the module as my first born is due in 11 weeks so shall be rushed off me feet then and only relised i have only 2yrs to complete everything else oops.
good luck with mod 2 i think a few people have struggled on it not just us.

I didn't have problems like that, but I did find I preferred one of the camera's metering modes over the greycard - photography's a very subjective thing.

Hi
I too had troubles with module two, in fact I haven't even looked at the coursework for far too long now...
Keep meaning to get out and give it another go but I kept getting frustrated and there were always other things to be doing with my free time!!
I'm going to make a conscious effort to get out in the next week or two and give it another go, will let you know how it goes.
Good luck James

Hi Sam
I really struggled too.... and still not sure my grey card reading was quite correct.
I wrote to the tutor and asked for help, but he said that sometimes depending on the subject there can be hardly any detectable difference between the metering modes... to practice I stood in front of my patio doors looking to the outside and took a photo on each different mode - that gave me the chance to see the difference in each mode, so I knew what to expect when out.. obviously I still took quite a few attempts to get it right (potentially right anyway). Overall I wasn't completely happy with my module 2, but was just glad to get it out of the way really!! Not had my results back yet.

As Kirstin said sometimes depending on the subject you are photographing there can be hardly any difference between the metering modes. When I took my photographs for the module I specifically took photos of the windmill in the centre of the image, knowing that the black walls of windmill would fool the meter reading on spot and centre weighting metering whereas the matrix reading would meter also for the sky. Therefore when I took the grey card reading it was closest to the matrix metering (including the sky).
Spot Metering
Centre Weighted Metering
Matrix (Pattern) Metering
Grey Card Metering
Bare with it, try taking a simple subject. Setting up a still life in the garden might be easier....
Hope this helps.

Think the first 5 modules are the hardest, tyring to photograph what you think they want. Also found this subject quite tricky, took lots of photos and got a bit jaded and frustrated with the whole course. Keep trying, send your images in because the feedback you get will explain a lot of things even if your images dont appear different. Christine

Garys are good examples, only slight differences. Think I was expecting massive variations. Chrisitne

Thank you everyone.
I think I have cracked it and I am ashamed to say what I think I was doing wrong. I will double check and might reveal the full depth of my dippyness in due course.

Why does real life keep getting the way of what I really want to do? A couple of weeks ago I realised what a numpty I was being and couldnt wait to get back out and finish the photo's for mod 2. Then last week we had our annual trade show to attend. This week the dog has had an op and my garden is being done (when I say done I literally mean cleared away completely and recreated) so I cant leave the house. There will be another week of the garden/dog situation to content with and then I am hoping to be able to get out and do what I should have done over a month ago!!!
Wow its so frustrating. Roll on retirement. Only 20 years to go
Hope everyone else is getting on better?
(wrathchild your photo's are looking great and you are really getting on with things. Well done!)
onwards and upwards!

Hey Sam
Thanks, I've not submitted my module 4 yet, still got to do the self assessment... been moving house for a month (had key a month early so been moving single-handedly until this weekend, when my mate came up and helped with his van.. now its all done and I'm settled in), so not had time to finish module 4 or think about module 5... I also say roll on Retirement lol!!!
Hope your dog is okay after the op

hi all.
I have also managed to crack mod 2 just need to think of a decent subject to get the shots done. while having a break on mod 2 i managed to complete mod 3 and half do 4 and 5, so the tutor will love me sending in 3 modules for marking at once haha.
think i will concentrate on mod 2 when i start my maternity leave a week tomoro :S
hope every1 elses modules are comming along well, have seen some really good shots

Bit of advice... try not to do too many modules at once and submit them all together. You may get some advice or guidance on your photography from your tutor on an early module which you can carry through on your future modules.
