Anyone have any advice for Trudy RE the above camera for £70? I suspect it's in the shop in Brighton rather than on ebay.

Off the top of my head, the price sounds okay, assuming good condition, but I'd probably try to haggle it down a bit. Check bellows for light leaks, shutter working on all speeds, etc. There isn't a lot to go wrong with cameras like this, but those two aspects are worth checking. The Selfixes were scale focussing only, I think, so some care needed in use. But stopped down to, say, f/11-16 with something like HP5 it should be capable of very respectable results. Worth a punt, I should think.

There are three 16/20 models ... the one with Ross Xpres f/3.5 75 mm lens is the one worth having.

I wonder which one she got...for £60! We'll blame Huw if it's a rubbish one   
Suspect it'll give better and more consistant negs that the Diana and help the learning curve along though

I had an 820 Special for some years, and it was a very decent performer with an excellent 105mm f3.8 Ross Xpress lens. They're among the better folders, for sure.

It is 75mm f4.5 ensar anastigmat
Its clean, all bits work, will give the lens a quick clean and blow out and stick a roll in
Ive also got the use of my teachers MF next week
to compare

I have an ensign selfix 16-20 with 3.5 75mm express.
This is the second I have owned, the first I bought when they were new out and I was 15.
This version has the albada folding finder and shutter speeds 1-1/300.
The only problem with them is the flash fitting which was their own design, though at the time you could easily get a 3mm coax adapter.

My first 'Good Camera' was the ensign Selfix 16/20 Model II with 75mm f3.5 Ross Xpres and Epsilon shutter I got in Aldgate, London for £24-10-3d NEW and sold it many years later for £10 to a camera club mate ! Well,£60 is EXPENSIVE for a camera from the 1950's when they were that price new!
I have been GIVEN a Model I with the 75mm f4.5 Ensar lens by an Old Gent who was moving and also gave me a Durst 601 enlarger. The ENSAR seemed to give sharper results than the Xpres! I took it to Scotland on a YHA trip with family some years ago,loaded with ORWO NP22 film 120 size, took some shots with a red filter on the way to Mull,processed film,did a 20x16" traditional darkroom print and won the Landscape/Seascape/Skyscape Trophy at my Camera Club !

This model is f4.5 with the same speeds, it doesnt have flash fitting...3mm coax adapter ?? sorry, what is this?
I have just developed my first roll, only one came out overexposed or i think i got confused and maybe rolled the film on thinking i had taken a photo?
I was lent a light meter but it didnt seem to be working so i used my digi to get, i hope, the right settings ....
One looks like it may be slightly underexposed? I took some pics of the trees in my garden and maybe they are a bit over exposed, im still trying to look at the negs and work out if they are exposed ok, i have 'the darkroom handbook' by Michael Langford.
will post results when i can print, which will be at college thursday....will have to flutter my eyelashes at the teacher as im suppose to be doing college work!

The 3mm coaxial connector was the (fairly) standard flash connector before the "accessory shoe" became the "hot shoe". The changeover occurred as the 35mm SLR took off-earlier slrs (such as my om1) had both a hot shoe and the coax connector but it disappeared in later models

Snowqueen : Thanks for viewing my Selfix photos I tried to put on here ; The one of Berlin was taken in 1956 when I was in the RAMC there , in Pathology unit at BMH Berlin, Spandau. I used Agfa Isopan F film. Anyway,I use the famous WESTON MASTER exposure meter- my Dad 'smuggled'a Mark II from Jersey for me in 1953 as there was no 'Purchase Tax' at 60% on it ! Now I have a Mark V with the Invercone for Incident Light readings, but if you use 125ASA FP4 B/W film, put it on 1/300th at f11 for bright sunlight photos and f5.6 for quite dull light you will get good results- don't forget to turn the FOCUS ring to the main distance you are photographing, it's NOT 'Auto-Focus'that wasn't invented in 1953 when the camera was new! The 1/300th shutter speed should be used as if it is 1/200th or so as it will not be accurate (ie Running SLOW)

Thanks for the info pete, i developed my first roll last night I think most of them look ok 
will print photos at college thursday, (im still looking for a neg holder to fit the negs for my enlarger) will scan and post, good or bad!
i also wrote down all the info when i took a pic, so i can see were i went wrong and what i got right ....
cant wait to see what they look like

The thing is, there are a couple of things to bear in mind with negative film:
1. It (typically) has huge exposure latitude, and
2. A bit of over-exposure in particular is no big problem - it just helps to saturate the shadows.
In fact many nagative shooters deliberately over-expose by as much as a stop for the benefits mentioned above. So really the difference between a leaf shutter that is running a bit slow (and they almost all do) and one that is spot on is barely worth worrying about. If you were shooting transparency film it might be another matter, but with negative film, whilst it's good to be aware of what your shutter is doing, you don't really need to be too concerned.

Bear in mind that when this model was new many experienced togs wouldn't have used a meter-just squinted at the scene and set a guesstimated aperture
