So I nipped out for an extra long lunch today... as I had an idea for my grey card metering submission. I toddled off to the Brampton Valley Way, where there are lots of old tunnels.. I thought that taking a photo from just inside the tunnel to the path leading away would be suitable for confusing my camera's meter... I just checked the pics on my computer and have now deleted them! The first shot was out of focus.. the spot and average metering were okay.. the grey card though didn't really work as I was in the dark of the tunnel.. and it wasn't a little tunnel, its 1/4 mile long... luckily I realised this at the time and went in search of another subject.
So I have come away with my six pictures, but I'm not totally happy with these either... but on the positive side I finally understand the spot metering... but I'm not happy with the focus I chose for the pictures... I focused on the path close to the tripod... with the path blurring away into the distance.. don't think it works.. anyway I've put them on my flickr for now.. not decided whether to submit yet.. any criticism greatly appreciated.. will help me make up my mind...
Wish I'd spent longer at my chosen area today.. but don't know if being in the tunnel freaked me out - I've not ventured in it since walking my dog through it and hating every minute a while back, but in the woods I generally felt uncomfortable and once I'd got my pics I didn't feel like hanging around.. weird!

Like I know anything - but I will start the ball rolling anyway lol
First of all I see exactly what you mean about the focus - I see what you tried to do and why you didnt think it worked. It didnt really work for me either if I am honest. However I think its a brilliant subject as far as good composition goes. Path leading you into the picture - a bend to make you wonder whats around it and even the little bench so that its not just a woodland subject.
If you dare go back and change the focus I think it would be a really good image. Maybe you could get somebody to sit on the bench and focus on them?
Thats my contribution but you know I am as new to this as you so hopefully somebody with some real knowledge will be a long soon and help us out
Did you have Tia with you on your walk? If not maybe you need her as bodyguard lol

Thanks Sam... I'm going to try again... maybe not same place though.. will see, have another idea to try first.
Didn't take Tia with me no, purely because she gets in the way a bit when I'm taking photos lol, although it was so quiet down there on a weekday that she would probably have been fine.. and yes a bit of a bodyguard If I go there again maybe she could pose for me by the bench.... not quite sure she can sit still through all six photos though!!

I can see what you were trying to do, however as Sam you need a point of focus in the image for the viewer to look at.

Okay I went out early this morning and took 2 more sets of pics.. slightly different subjects, both lots taken at the reservoir.. much happier with these.. of course I still think I'm not necessarily doing the grey card thing right - but the tutor said to do what I thought was right and send it in... so going to make my mind up between the two sets later.. unless I think of another alternative subject for the pics between now and then!!
I don't like Module 2 its been doing my head in.. but I'm sure it will be clear as mud one day its making me overwhelmed by how good everyone else is.

Okay Module 2 is ready to be posted! Eek! Have put the images on my Flickr - but one is missing because I have reached my upload limit! The missing one is my grey image.. which I finally settled on a gravestone... hmm gravestones featured in my module 1 too.. I'm not really morbid!
Oh make that two are missing - I accidentally deleted the white image that I have used! ooops
