      #781996 - 09/04/2009 06:16

Currently running but not recieving a great deal of notice.
Not mentioned on the LUF, not mentioned at all on Red Dots site (it is on other UK dealers) I wonder why?

Both R G Lewis and Richard Caplan have it on Home page, so the deal is being shown by some retailers.

It's also on Red Dot front page.

Sorry, couldn't see it there at all over the weekend - perhaps the website changes take longer to reach Anglesey
Still, an interesting proposition.

That's proof that the interweb rumours are correct then .... Leica are clearing out stock of the M8 ready for a full frame M9 appearing in the shops by 12 July (St Veronica's Day) .......

If they knocked £1500 off the price of an M8.2 I might think about the possibility of being slightly interested ....

With the latest firmware there's very little operational difference between the M8 and M8.2 to be frank. The major one was the discreet mode on the .2, but that's now available to M8 users as they had demanded. Forget the so-called snapshot mode; one might not use 1/8000th very often, but it's a whole lot more use IMHO.

Who was "they" that demanded it, Tim?

Both of mine are in for upgrade; on that version, you get an even less useful 8 seconds just to take up the space but the ability to shoot quietly is to me an M pre-requisite; the original M8 is a bit of a noisy old thing.

I've got both M8 and M8.2 versions, and having upgraded the firmware on the 8, the only difference I can spot between the shutter sound in discreet mode is that the .2 is at a lower pitch. There's no discernible difference in volume. That pitch difference may make the .2 less noticeable under some conditions, or it may not. Either way though, it's the pesky motor cocking that makes the real racket.

As for who "they" are/were, I certainly don't have time or inclination to trawl over the LUF, but wouldn't mind betting there were calls for discreet mode to be made available on the 8, either as part of the upgrade options, or otherwise. Thankfully, we got the otherwise option. Suffice to say for now that after the firmware came out there were numerous posts saying thank you Leica for listening to customers.

My question was tongue in cheek as it was me who made himself very unpopular with a pair of threads entitled "Hot Air and Broken Promises". It's good that the delayed shutter wind is now available to all M8 users.
