Help!! A friend of a friend has asked me to help photograph her wedding in July. She does have a professional on the job too but they only paid for the basic package and he wont stay that long. Ive said I would do it for nothing as it would be great experience but Im hoping some of you on here might be able to lend some good advice!!
Heres hoping! Thanks Kate

Hi Kate
I am new to all this, but when I had my photos done on my wedding day I was all confused, the only piece of advise I could give is to get the bride to write down pics she wants taken that way you can reserch the best way to take them.
Hope this does help

My wedding day was a long long time ago so I cant remember what mine did but a set I looked at recently of a friends wedding were great. They had two photographers - one doing the formal set where everyone stood around smiling at the camera and then another did informal stuff. Spotting little bridesmaids picking flowers out of the perfectly done beds etc lol They were a lovely record of what was happening 'off the ball' so to speak so maybe that could be something you could look at rather than just repeating what the official photographer does.
I spose it depends on what the bride wants but it was a lovely additional to the standard album I thought.
Enjoy it whatever you do.

Oooooh thank you for all your advice! Meaco - thats exactly what the bride has asked me to do! Ive googled wedding photo ideas too and had a good look through alot of sites to get more quirky ideas. Im just worried the pics will come out blurry and not really sure what setting would be best to try to make it perfect. Ah - what a worry wart eh??? Anyway, the wedding is this saturday so wish me luck and im sure I'll post a few up here!
Thanks again guys! Kate

I reckon a lot of deep breaths to steady the nerves and take lots so that you can weed out the ones that didnt work or the ones that you dont like the look of.
You could have it on continuous shooting so that maybe if you miss the shot the first time you could get it with the next couple.
I did one family do and deleted the whole lot apart from some macro's of the flowers lol but then I am a muppet so I am sure you will do much better
Good Luck

Good luck at the wedding. I'm second shooting at a wedding on Saturday too. Fingers crossed for us both eh?
Let us know how it goes and I look forward to seeing some of your images.

The 'Pro' will be doing the regular formal shots so do try not to just repeat what he does. Wander around the edges, look for the out of the ordinary and consider taking them in black and white. If you really are that green as to be asking 'what settings' then set your camera to full auto or even programme mode - do the same with your flash and use it on every shot (take spare batteries). The flash will work as a fill light if you shoot against the sun at all and really help when in 'difficult' situations. I wish you well but weddings are amongst the most difficult of assignments even if you do it for a living. I have shot hundreds and really enjoy it but it is hard work - usually from 8AM until midnight if there is an evening 'do'. Don't drink at all. What seems to be a really 'arty' set up or angle after a couple of sherbets will inevitably disappoint when printed. Take your time when setting up, NEVER allow the folk to rush you. If you are unsure - shoot again. Keeping away from the main shoot will give you a multitude of relaxed opportunities that folk will really thank you for later. Try and grab bride and groom to take them into the reception hall before the reception starts - get some 'cake' shots without the snapper scrum that occurs when the real cutting happens. Conentrate and good luck.

Hi
Help may be at hand in the form of AP. The issue that goes on sale on Tuesday 7th July, dated 11th July is all about being the unofficial wedding photographer. There's whole section on the top ten wedding pitfalls and how to avoid or correct them.
Best of luck!

Hello all! Well wedding went great!! Thank god for the pro though as my nerves were well and truly present on the day! Struggled a bit with indoor shots as it was in a castle which was quite dark but in the end lumped for the auto setting so did get some decent shots. Different story outside though and shot some beauties (if I do say so myself!) Overall took about 400 photos! yep count em I said 400!!! So out of those Im sure theres a few the bride will like!! It was a VERY long day but I really enjoyed it and it just re-inforced how much there is to learn in photography.
Anyway, thank you all for your advice - & shame the article in the mag didnt come out the week before!!
Im hoping I dont get asked to second shoot for anything for a while!!
Cheers Kate

Hi
I'm glad to hear the wedding went okay. The one I did went really well although the bride was very unsure about the whole photography thing - rather odd.
Luckily AP dropped through my letterbox on the morning of the wedding so I had a chance to quickly read through the tips beforehand - thanks AP!!!!

I did warn you Kate but the one thing you will find with this game is that you never stop learning with either photography or people. They can be at one and the same time the most frustrating and enjoyable things you ever get involved with

There was a sheep at the wedding? Very good indeed Kate, tight composition and pretty decent exposures, try to not overdo the 'arty' angles. One or two are fine. The 'still lives' are always good to have in the album as people don't notice these things on the day and you seem to have captured good moods with your people shots. Keep it up and you could have a whole new career. For the parents 'do' at the weekend, soft lighting is always preferable for the more mature amongst us - so bounce flash or a damn good diffuser on your gun is the order of the day and keep them away from walls, the shadows are never flattering.

Well you know Parisian - the best man brought along one of the grooms ex-girlfriends!! No - there were no sheep at the wedding - thankfully!
Thanks for the advice for the 'oldies' do on saturday but I only have the flash within the camera and dont have any diffusers!! But keeping them away from walls is a great idea - thanks! I think I've got plenty of photos stashed away somewhere which look like some 3 eyed monster is about to attack!!!
Cheers Kate

A diffuser is easy Kate. Grab a pair of tights off some unsuspecting granny and cut a piece out. Tape over the flash on your camera and hey presto - a diffuser. 10 denier is about right anything more is a tad too thick. Leave your camera in programme mode and it will compensate for the tights giving you nice soft shots. Experiment on the cat or the budgie tonight or tomorrow.
