Grey Card Grief!
      #780952 - 06/04/2009 12:33

I'm so confused!!!

I've just been out to Triangular Lodge near where I live to try do Exercise 2 of Module 2.... the three pics I took based on the spot, centre and matrix metering.. all look identical when I've got them home and put them on my computer. The grey card reading and the plus 2 stops, - 1/2 stop do all look different obviously.. but I haven't a clue whether I have done it correctly.

I don't know if I'm just dim or if my camera instructions aren't clear enough.. I've now bought countless photography books from the reading list plus one that just concentrates on exposure... every one explains grey card reading in exactly the same way as the course manual... but its just not sinking in

The only way to find out is to get them sent in. I guess its all about learning and the point is to learn not to already know. Thats what I hope anyway. I have just taken the same photo's for module 2 and am about to do the writing up. i'm hoping sending them in and getting feedback will tell us if we're right or wrong. Hoping being the operative word. Good luck anyway.

Silly question, but you did have the camera in full manual control didn't you? (Or at the very least exposure lock the reading from the card)

Good luck to you too... I think I need to take them again though.. I'd rather send them in with a basic understanding and then let them tell me where I went wrong, rather than send them in when I think I've done it wrong.. I'll have another go later in week.. doing my head in at mo lol!

hehe yeah it was on full manual control... when I practised at home I got much better results... alas I deleted the pics as they weren't of any particular planned composition... wish I'd spent longer there today now, since i'd paid the entrance fee, if I'd remembered my notebook I probably would have done

I bought ones of those netbooks 10" things to carry round with me as I have found I have several little habits that make my life a little more difficult. Firstly I can't seem to hold the camera straight! And when I change the white balance I keep forgetting to change it back again! I know its just me getting used to taking photos properly but I am concerned that I could waste a lot of time and money getting into places (just to take photos) and then deleting a lot of them when I get home lol

Hope you manage to get the results you are looking for. I am just starting to think about where I can go that is quiet enough to set up a tripod for an hour while I mess around getting the settings etc. right. Decided the Easter weekend probably was not the best time

Well I've been camping this weekend and took my laptop and tripod with me.... but the one day I found the perfect exposure setting subject I was on a long walk with my over-excitable dog and only had my compact camera with me... looking back at the pics I took (one of which was overexposed slightly), I think it would have been just the place.. alas I'm home now, so I'll have to try and recapture that moment closer to home!
