That supplement on Landscape Photographer of the Year has come in really useful. My wife read it, made me buy the book, and is now telling me to take more pictures and print them. On the less positive side, she's back into photography herself, keeps swiping my copies of WDC and AP, and wants a DSLR for her birthday. The negative bit about that last one is that it means I won't be able to buy myself a new one for a bit longer.

Beware the wife who shows an interest in photography, there's an inverse relationship with them and the amount of kit you can sneak in under the radar.

But if she has the same make you can always buy her that 600mm f4 lens you always wanted for her birthday.............

I suspect if I tried that one, I would have a very deep hole - with a 600mm f4 shoved into it!

Just a thought...
Start persuading SWMBO that second hand kit is really the best way to go - any teething problems will have been dealt with and you can see images taken with the camera. Then convince her that whatever body you want to upgrade from would be a perfect one for her to use to get back into photography. Of course, the problem is that you would then be short of a camera - perfect excuse to get a new body! (Mind you, a 600mm f/4 is at least round so probably easier to retrieve from a deep hole than a body...)

Yeah, she's not mug enough to fall for that one. No, if I want to use it to my kit-buying advantage, I'll have to play the long game.

About 2' long?
Well, 600mm is the nearest metric equivalent!

Yeah, thanks guys.
Anyway, it's cost me a (refurbished) EOS 450D. Now, next part of the plan is to keep borrowing her camera to use the Live View until she gets so fed up she suggests I get one with the feature myself...
(No, I'm not that bothered about Live View, but it's an excuse. )

You need to beware; a new found innerest in photography may well lead her to this very forum... it is, after all, the best photography forum on the Interweb!

With one fundamental flaw, she might just say, "Well if you want Live View so much why don't we just swap cameras?"

Yeah, that's a worry. However, she seems fairly hooked on the 450D as small and light - and I've started a parallel but related approach on how old-fashioned my camera is now...
In truth, however devious I think I am, I know I'll only get my own way when I think she thinks I think she thinks it's her idea...
Actually, I'm rather amazed at how good the 450D is - it's a very serious yet very lightweight bit of kit. I'm far more impressed in use than I thought I would be, and the kids think it's the dog's doodahs. Going back to that poll about entry-level cameras a few weeks ago, if I couldn't live with the 1000D, I probably could with the 450D. Better keep that one quiet!
