I would like to put a 'watermark' (title/file number) into photos for club competitions. I am using Elements 6 but don't know how to do it!
I was sure it could be done - any guidance gratefully received!

A watermark is something that goes on top of a photo and is visible.
Is this what you are after?
If so, just type the information in a new layer and adjust it's opacity.

Thanks for your reply, yes this is what I am after and this is what I have resorted to, but I thought (would like) the 'watermark' could be made to change density/colour depending on what it was over? ie dark over a light background and light over a dark background?

It can, bring up the 'Layers' palette and change the 'blending mode' from 'Normal' to 'Difference'. White text is best for this effect.
Problem is though, if this is for 'photos for club competitions' as you mentioned, then anything you write on top of the picture will surely ruin the picture?
The club I was at, we used to but this detail in the filename

You may find a judge will mark you down for adding a distraction such as this to the image. Members at our club have lost marks for adding borders and titles. be warned, most judges do not like them.

Thanks again for the info, I shall have a look at that!
At our club 'model shoots' we are encouraged to give the up and coming models photos to add to their portfolio, it is these pictures that I wish to add the details from whome it came.
I realise that putting details across a competition entry is no way to gain marks!

Saves them having to be more appreciative of what the photographer was striving for.

In CS3 you can design a logo and text, then crop it and save it as a jpeg and convert it to a brush. You can then use the brush to drop your watermark logo into your image on a new layer, resize it at will and reduce the layer opacity to fade the logo. You can also set the colour as well.
VERY USEFUL.
I am not sure, but I see no reason why you cannot do this in Elements if it lets you design brushes.
