I've read reports that the honeycomb metering in the 7D has a stroong tendency to underexpose. As I'm about to take delivery of a 7D I'd be interested to hear any experiences/tips along these lines.

There is evidence to support this and I have in most circumstances have between a half and a full stop exposure compensation dialled in (the standard for me tends to be +2/3rds)

I also have a 7D and don't have to make any exposure compensation for normal shots. Obviously I need to make compensation in difficult situations.

Thanks guys. Ron, do you find this applies only to honeycomb metering or is it also needed for spot and centre?

I'll apply compensation where I need it, that's the beauty of digital you can check out the results instantaneously and amend accordingly

Thanks Ron, your input much appreciated. Are you still shooting mainly with the 7d or have you added one of the Alphas to your collection? Haven't been on the forum for a long time and well out of touch!

For the moment the 7D is still the main digital photographic tool, I have been considering an Alpha, would love an A900, but financially under current circumstances really can't justify it, however I do think I'll need to get either the 350 or 700 sometime soon, fortunately I do have a wide selection of lenses that will fit either

It has the even stronger annoying tendency of consistently excellent results. It's so annoying...

Quick update, took the 7D out for a proper test drive over the weekend. Bracketed most shots +/- 0.5 and at least 80% were best at the metered value. As MickLL stated above, more difficult lighting situations need a little more effort but on the whole very pleased and the picture quality is great.

My experience precisely.
I've toyed with the idea of the 900 but, at the moment, rejected it for several reasons.
First my print output is declining because most of my needs are now projected images. As you know that's limited anyway and I have to downsize significantly even from the 7D.
Second (at the risk of starting a 'discussion'  ) I still think that there's nothing to beat a traditional slide and so still use my film cameras for that.

Seeing we're updating, I now have an alpha 900, I did go into Jessops with the intention of purchasing an A700 but handled the A900 they had as a demo and was allowed to fit my wide zoom, bad move. So, don't handle A900's or look through the viewfinder or observe the image quality on the screen especially when zooming in to the image you've just taken, 'cause you'll just hand over your plastic and say SOLD!
