I know there's not many of you here that have a strong opinion on cameras and the like ( ) so we wondered what you all thought of our choice of the Nikon D700 for the Amateur Photographer Product of the Year 2009. Is it the right winner? Are there other products more deserving? What would you have picked?
Head to the home page to vote in the poll: Do you agree with our choice for the Amateur Photographer Product of the Year Award?
Thanks for taking part and for being so much fun

Bit of a daft question Damien seeing as the forum voted the D700 as it's own product of the year!

One might think that was a fair point, but there were plenty that didn't vote and others that disagreed at the time - so here they can have a rant. Plus there are the new people who weren't around before Christmas, and there's...

Plenty times, but they always come round in the end. Either that or I just moved on to the next one.

I from abstained from the forum vote as I didn't think any of the candidates offered were worthy of the title and I've also voted no in the AP poll.

Well you can't complain, you were given the chance to nominate for the short list here and I see that you chose not to.
Seeing as you voted no, what would you suggest instead?

I nominated the Pentax K20D, but I can see that the D700 is also a worthy contender, so I'm happy to go along with the majority decision.

I think the D700 was a worthy winner of AP Product of the Year, but I'm less convinced that we should've voted it as Forum Product of the Year - that's nothing to do with its undoubted merits, but more to do with the fact that I think I would be more comfortable with a product that forum users were actually using, or were seriously considering purchasing, and any £1500 camera is unlikely to fall into either category for the huge majority of forum users. My own personal choice was Lightroom 2.0, as I think it's a fantastic product that's likely to be of significant benefit to a majority of forum members. All that said, I had absolutely no qualms in presenting the trophy to Nikon for what is a great camera.

That was a pre-condition for nominating products, though not specified in the actual vote. Nevertheless, I must admit to having been surprised by how often I see people on the forum mentioning either owning or intending to purchase a D700.
BTW, it's about the same price the Nikon D100 was when it became (by my crude reckoning, and at the time) the forum's most popular DSLR. We even had an inaugural meet of the AP Forum Nikon D100 Owners' Club at Stansted House near Portsmouth!

I agree with the choice. I've never used a D700 but I've read the glowing reviews and at least Nikon seem to have concentrated on image quality rather than a high mp count. That's got to be worth praise.
I don't think that it's too expensive to be awarded product of the year either as us lot are enthusiasts and will at some time own a camera in this price range or at least aspire to. Got to remember that lots of people will think that an entry level DSLR's price of £500 is obscene when you can get a perfectly good camera at ASDA for £29.99, so all things are relative.

Just so. And FWIW I've just checked up on the inflation effect since I started in photography in the mid-1970s. The street price ot the D700 today is pretty much equivalent to the street price then of one of Ebenezer Roberts' ( ) favourite ever cameras - the Olympus OM1 (with a 50mm f/1.8).
