Samsung GX-20

I need the money, so here goes

This was a camera (make and model) that I had not considered before as I was lucky enough to win it in a competition (from your sister magazine, Amateur Photographer). I must admit, initially I wondered what I was going to do with it as I already had a system (Canon EOS with lenses, dedicated flashes and other accessories). But, being a lover of everything photographic I gave the GX-20 a chance and I must admit that I have grown rather fond of it. I've even garnished it with a new lens (replacing the kit lens) a Tamron 18-250mm. Not only has this camera become the camera of choice when we go out on weekend walks but it has now become my holiday camera, special events camera etc In otherwords, the GX-20 is probably my everyday camera (but still not replacing the Canon, there is room for more than one DSLR system in my life).

So, what do I most like about the GX-20:
  • Resolution - at >14M pixels it gives lovely sharp images which can be cropped
  • Build quality - it feels quite robust which gives you confidence
  • Compact - ideal for those long weekend breaks
  • In camera shake reduction - even with some old Tamron adaptall lenses the shake reduction can be tailored to the focal length

And what am I less keen about:
  • Lengthy menus - some things are difficult to find
  • Bundled software - Silkypix is included, but no match for the software which Canon bundle with their cameras.
  • Not having full access to other lens manufacturers ranges
  • Metering and exposures can be inconsistent (but that is easily dealt with by looking at the histograms and applying appropriate correction or post-capture if using RAW)

Here's some example images:
