RIP Terry Fincher
      #715920 - 09/10/2008 00:08

A school boy hero of mine has died recently. Terry Fincher (of Photographers International) has died.

Quote:

As half-inched from BJP:

Terry Fincher, the four-times winner of the Press Photographer of the Year award, has died of cancer. He was 77.
In a career that started in 1945, the legendary Fleet Street photographer covered the Suez crisis, the Vietnam War and the conflict in Northern Ireland, travelled to India and Rhodesia, and took a famous picture of train robber Charlie Wilson whom Fincher had known growing up in south London.
However, unlike many of his contemporaries, when he covered wars, he tended to concentrate of the human effects on both the civilian and military population.
He worked with his daughter, Jayne, also a photographer, and became close to Princess Diana of Wales. The images would become part of the Princess Diana Memorial Trust Archive, now part of Getty Images.
He is survived by his three daughters, Jayne, Sally and Lucy, his wife June having died on 19 September.

I knew Terry reasonably well, his outfit (Photographers International) were only about 6 miles from where I lived as a teenager and Lucy (his youngest) was gorgeous, despite being very shortsighted. Terry was one of the proper "old school" snappers and always had time for every up-and-coming snapper, I did a few bits and pieces for him in the early 1980s. I spoke to him last, about a year ago, maybe a little more and he was only doing archive business but surprised me that he was still on top of the digital game.

He will be sorely missed, especially by me, as I was a bit of a fan-boy when I was a young teen (and before).

RIP Terry and best wishes to the surviving family.

Sorry if this has already been posted elsewhere in the forum.

There's a two-page spread in the Daily Excess today. Including a nice shot of Terry with an early Leica M2 (sans self-timer) and an unidentified SLR round his neck.

Paul,

It was in the News forum but I don't think anybody minds, especially with you having a personal connection with such a well respected 'Tog
