I wanted to capture the half moon sitting in the branches of my Eucalyptus tree but unfortunately when I switched on the digi all I could see through the viewfinder was a lot of black and a tiny white out of focus blob. Right, back to basics! Having tried a few dummy shots at 4,5 and 6 seconds i switched to manual and then realised something. when a lot of cameras are in manual they use a different metering method-in this case centre weighted, so naturally its going to read all the dark area and tell me to use a really long exposure-in fact it was saying that 60 seconds wasnt long enough! That would have killed the moon! I tried shutter priority but that didnt work so back to Av,lens zoomed out a little, maximum aperture now f3.2, so I kept it at that, manual focus, set to infinity(AF wouldn't target it) and managed to get an acceptable shot. not exactly what I wanted but I couldnt use the vuiewfinder to compose the scene-all guesswork! Heres the result of my efforts-I swear that by the time I'd finished the sky was darker! Panasonic FZ7 8 seconds at f3.2

The image of the moon is compleatly burned-out. If you want to record any detail on the moon[depending on image size on the neg/sensor] try an exposure of 5.6-8 at shutterspeed equal to the asa being used. Unfortunatly,to record anything else in the pic, It would have to be recorded at the same time with the limited amount of light available.....Tho you could photoshop two separate images. Try a "Moonshot" by itself, then tell us how you got on.

ASA means ISO, so it's ISO 200, not 1/200th of a second

If you shoot the scene with Film/Digital rated at 200 Iso [ASA as us old yins called it] The aprox exposure would be 1/200th. @ 5.6-8 Hope this is a bit clearer,.

Oops my fault - I thought you were asking if asa200 meant 1/200th of a second.
Not, shoot at asa200 AND at 1/200th
Sorry!

That's probably my fault for not making myself clear in the first place. Let's blame it on PTS [post trolljester syndrome]

Err, i'm confused now! You saying to get detail on the moon i'd shoot at 1/ISO at f5.6? That would be 1/80 in this case, and I'd just get a BIG black area with a tiny moon in the top right corner. I can of course get a full moon shot no problem, I have done so in the past, but to get a night scene featuring a small moon and get detail in both is a logistical nightmare, unless youre really really good with HDR!
(This is a pic taken with a phone at the eyeoiece of my small scope)

I have been waiting for 32 years for a full moon in a certain position in the sky, [September/October] Every year, it has either rained, been overcast or something else happens that I can't get onto the flat roof at my work,to take the pic. don't realy want to cheat, but may have to. Logistical nightmare....time of day/Illumination level/Full moon...Tell me about it.!

Aprox mid-afternoon the full moon apears just where I want it to be, over the observertory on blackford hill. Viewing this only once, about 33 years ago,an idea came into my head, for a photograph called "Morningside Moonrise" No prizes for guessing who gave me the inspiration.

Yes, a certain Mr Adams was the inspiration....or at least one of his photographs. Have seen a New York city version, with the same sort of visual impact.

Having studied his work at college I'd love to a homage to Adams, but i fear we just dont have that grand scenery to do him justice!
