40-150mm f3.5-4.5 vs 40-150mm f4-5.6 ED?
      #714363 - 06/10/2008 11:29

Hi this is my first post on here although I regularly visit the forum for Olympus help. I have the 40-150mm f3.5-4.5 and am thinking about selling up and buying the new 40-150mm f4-5.6 ED. The main reason being it's half the weight and smaller, although I don’t like the idea of swapping my old lens for a slower one despite it only being half a stop. I don’t use this lens that often but usually carry it around in my bag just in case I need something longer than my walk-about lens the 14-54mm f2.8-3.5 so the weight loss would really benefit me. Has anyone had both these lenses so some kind of comparison is possible? Any help appreciated, thanks.

When I bought my E-510 kit I kept the 40-150mm from my old E-500 kit so I could compare the two and decide which to keep.

In the end it was a close run thing. As you say, the extra speed of the older lens was pretty good, however I felt the newer lens was slightly sharper. In the end though, it was purely down to size and weight, I liked the idea of having a lighter camera bag and more space.

I felf the IS on the E-510 more than made up for the loss of speed.

Thanks

Nick

Thanks a lot for your review on both lenses, I thought someone out there must have owned both lenses at some point! I think I'll probably go and handle the lens in the shop and see what I think but the weight and size loss on paper look great.
