They say that proper photographers have a camera with them all the time, and carry one every where they go - and you can't be a proper photographer unless you do.
Did you ever get asked, after witnessing an amazing event, 'Wow, did you get a picture of that?' and then have to admit that, although you are known as the photographer in your social circle, you didn't have a camera with you at the time?
You can carry a camera all the time waiting for one of those events to happen in front of your lens, and find it never happens. But we don't have to wait for one of those events, as actually what we should be carrying a camera for is to capture the things that happen around us every day.
We tend to wait for the extraordinary, or when we go somewhere new, and leave our home lives unrecorded. When was the last time you took a picture of your family at sunday lunch? Or your kids in school uniform - their first day? You get the idea.
So, do you carry a camera all the time, or do you think its just not necessary? Is everyday photography not your bag, as you specialise in landscapes or macro and only get the camera out for that?
Head to the home page to take part in our poll:
how often do you carry a camera?
Thanks for taking part.
Damien

I went to a friends 40th wedding celebrations recently and deliberately left all camera gear at home as we thought it would be intrusive. As soon I arrived my host greeted me "Hey you are a photographer - could you take some photos?" and thrust two rolls of film, a brand new Camera (still in bubble rap) and a battery into my hands. So there I was breaking the two most important rules in photography (NEVER use a new camera on an important assignment, and ALWAYS practice with an unfamiliar camera).
Anyway they were very pleased with the result but I was a complete nervous wreck.
Morals: 1. Always have your own camera, at least in the car 2. If you are going to ask someone to take photos ask him the night before!

I usually have my camera with me, except at work. I always have my mobile with me - with a camera - it may be a basic 3Mega pixey digital compact but it is better than nothing and I have taken some reasonable shots with it.

I carry a camera "almost all of the time" but that is for the unexpected or as a notebook. That is a pocketable compact. If I'm photographing something serious I carry a "serious" camera that just wouldn't be practical the rest of the time.

We may decry the camera phone as heinz but it does mean always having a camera to hand.

Unless I'm out shopping, I always have a camera with me.
Either the DSLR, or the G9 lives in my briefcase.

'Occasionally' could become 'almost all the time' with one of these new four thirds jobs qnd a pancake lens.(but not the bridge lookalike previewed in this morning's AP). A Sigma DP2 might also fit the bill if it is any good. I am of an age that accepts a standard fixed focal length. A thin body with a collapsable pancake lens would be great. Can I. have a built in phone and mp3 please?

Voted 'Almost all the time' - it is actually very rare that I don't have a camera with me, only when I'm working and know that I am going to be entering a 'sensitive' site and the security checks are going to be a nightmare!

I only carry a camera when I'm going to use it ... used to do "street photography" but not for a long while now.

I carry one all the time. Be it a DSLR or a compact and I preferrably carry a DSLR.

Most of the time I have the G9 with me. Don't always use it though, some days my eyes are more open.

No, I don't call myself a photographer, except when I have a camera with me, ready for action.
I don't always carry a camera, it's liberating to not carry it sometimes.

IN the days when I used film and deved/printed my own I always carried a folding Zeiss Ikon with me. Nowadays I always have my camera-phone with me even f the quality isn't that good. There's no way I'd take a camera with me when working, plaster dust and water don't go to well with electrics and lenses
If I go out on a weekend anywhere I always put my camera bag in the car just in case.

Well I always carry a small bag for wallet, keys and all the other bits and pieces. In there fits a little Ricoh GR1s. In the car there is always the Coolpix 5000 - good enough quality for most situations. The bigger Nikons, the Leicas and 'Blads are bagged and ready for more planned (or paid) outings. I am not sure that any of this makes me a photographer though I suspect that 'always carrying a camera', is a tad light in the definitions department.

My little minolta g600 is always in the car and , if I do not have my Dslr with me, the G600 goes with me on foot.
Before that I always had my Olympus XA in a belt pouch with me. I would say they are very comparable cameras.
I will occasionally take my Canon G6 with me if I want some thing between the G600 and my 40D.
