Extension tubes but no aperture ring!
      #712579 - 30/09/2008 22:11

Apologies if this has been asked before, but a quick search didn't throw up the answer.

Today I frittered away a fiver on a set of Vivitar 'auto' extension tubes for my GX-10. Everything fits fine but, of course, my kit lenses don't have an aperture ring and the extension tubes have no electrical contacts.

Is there any sensible way of using this combo, or do I now need to track down a cheap compatible lens that has manual aperture control?

Thanks!

I cannot see how you could activate the iris without an electrical contact. I have an oldish 3 piece set of Pentax extension tubes which has the mechanical link to operate the iris. I use them with the lens on 'A' and set the aperture in camera. You will probably need a lens with an aperture ring with the 'A' setting for semi auto, or use manual stop down on the other.

Hi John

I've not tried but I dont think there is any way you can use them with modern lenses even in manual mode as there appears to be no way to control the aperture either manually or electrically.

However if you dont want to buy older lenses, then Jessops were selling their 'own brand' auto tubes in Pentax fit for £30+ pounds. These will work with your modern lenses but without autofocus of course. I have a set and they are fine.

Hope this helps

I've just taken delivery of a 50mm SMC A Pentax lens, which appears to get on ok with my GX 10 and Vivitar extension tubes. I have not had chance to play properly with them yet but initial shots show promise.
What I need now is an obliging insect to pose for me (no spiders)
