Stars of Photokina 2008
      #711487 - 27/09/2008 17:30

My list of the most interesting/ground-breaking new products shown at Photokina 2008 is as follows:

Nikon D90
Okay, so this was launched just before the show, but the word among UK dealers I talked to was that this camera is currently decimating all rivals in the sub-£1000 market, (including its big brother, the D300) thanks largely to the inclusion of HD video recording

Canon EOS 5DII
It was a long wait but on paper, well worth it. Excellent spec, and HD video (again). Video really seems to have captured a lot of people's imagination. One UK dealer told me this is the most pre-ordered camera in 20 years in the trade

Sony Alpha 900
Personally I'm hugely excited by the prospect of one day being able to afford a full-frame DSLR, and more cameras and a third manufacturer in this market makes that more likely. The A900 may not have LiveView or video, but all the key important things seem extremely well thought out. And the new flashgun is a stroke of genius

Panasonic Lumix G1
Its not for me personally but I know from our correspondence that this first Micro Four Thirds camera hits a potentially huge market sector right in the bullseye. The only downside I can see so far is the price, which seems a bit high

Fujifilm SuperCCD EXR
This new sensor seems to solve a big problem. People still seem to want more and more pixels, but more pixels equals a deterioration in noise, colour and dynamic range. This sensor can switch between being optimised for high resolution, low noise or wide dynamic range, by changing its properties. Its currently intended only for compacts at the moment, but I think this technology could benefit DSLR users too

Microsoft Photosynth
The most mind-blowing exhibit at the show, this is like science fiction, expect that its available now, not in some futuristic movie. Photosynth maps a range of photos of a landmark/subject into a 3D CAD style model which you can move around, go inside and zoom right into. Unbelievable!
Check some out here and let your mind be well and truly boggled

I've seen a demo of Photosynth and it was really amazing. I'd love to give it a go but sadly it won't work on my iMac Being Microsoft I won't hold my breath for a mac version.

Microsoft told us they ARE working on a Mac version of Photosynth, you'll be pleased to hear.

Has anyone else out there seen it?
