Requirements for WDC User Reviews
      #712271 - 30/09/2008 00:35

WDC features a User Reviews section that constantly needs feeding. Anyone who fancies earning £50 is welcome to post a review here for possible publication but we do have certain requirements:

• The review can be of a digital SLR, compact, lens, flashgun, tripod, bag, printer, software or any photographic accessory or service.

• The length needs to be around 100 words. It can be as little as 80 words, and as long as 150 words (max), and we reserve the right to edit text for length and clarity.

• You don't need to be Shakespeare but reviews should be clearly written in full, grammatical sentences. No shorthand, phone text style language etc.

• Reviews should conclude with a bullet point summary of Good Points and Bad Points.

• Reviews should express honest opinion but should be balanced and fair, whether positive, negative or neutral in tone. We don't want an angry rant, or gushing hyperbole.

• We want our readers to feel that the user review has been useful, especially if they're considering buying whatever it is that's being reviewed. Critique should be informed and in-depth, not shallow and superficial.

• Be specific. "Image quality is poor" is not as useful as "Images are noisy above ISO 400 and there is strong fringing in high contrast areas".

• With DSLRs and lenses there is the scope to publish longer reviews up to 500 words, over a double page spread, but only if accompanied by really strong pictures. You're welcome to post these reviews here (preferably with links to pictures) or you may want to check with us first beforehand via a PM.

• Posting here does not guarantee publication. That depends on the quality of the information in the review, and the mix of different types of product we try to get into each issue. Those whose reviews we do publish will be paid £50, by cheque, upon publication.

Thanks

Are you only looking for current items, or things which users may be interested in picking up second hand?

Mostly current gear. There isn't much of a market for most used digital cameras (except a few high end ones perhaps). Perhaps let us know what you have in mind first.

Nigel, what point of view do you want for these reviews? Are you looking for a personal view e.g. I bought product x because I needed y when I z? Or a more 'professional' view for want of a better term, e.g. Product x is ideal for those photographers who need to y when they z?

Definitely a personal view. I should have made that clear in the guidelines.
